A message from our Veterinarian AdministratorHappy New Year from DCAS

We want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and a brighter 2024! This past year has been difficult for our small shelter, and we are ready to start fresh. Here is what we are looking forward to in 2024:

  • Fewer Crisis Cases - Animal hoarding is often the result of mental illness, leading people to house more animals than they can properly care for. DCAS provided shelter for numerous cases of hoarded animals this past year. These cases are tough for many reasons: the animals are often in poor condition and require special care, our small staff is spread thin with the increased population, and working with the families is emotionally draining for everyone. We hope we've seen the worst of this hoarding trend in our community, but we ask our community to help us prevent future crises through -
  • Earlier Interventions - Many believe the pandemic contributed to the recent spike in hoarding cases. As people isolated themselves to protect their health, vulnerable residents were left alone. It is important to check in with your friends, family, and neighbors to prevent problems from becoming emergencies. For further guidance, please reach out to us.
  • Extended Programming - Our education team is partnering with community libraries, schools, scouts, and other organizations to reach even more people this year. Interested in a program? Contact us!
  • Continued and Increased Community Support - We could not do what we do without the support of our community. We need your help to spread the word of our work. Misinformation, online or in person, can hinder our efforts to Save Animals and Serve People in DuPage County. Advocating for your local shelter can broaden our reach and help us save more animals this year.
  • Raise the Woof Gala, April 12th - Save the Date! Join DuPage Animal Friends and support the shelter's capital campaign.
  • New Shelter Addition - Construction is underway with an anticipated completion at the end of this year. The additional space will allow us to more humanely care for the shelter animals and serve the needs of DuPage County. We will be able to expand volunteer and educational opportunities. Learn more about the expansion on our website.

A New Year is as brand-new chapter to our story, waiting to be written. Together, we can write an incredible tail!

New Year, New Home!

Guinea Pigs: Jobu, Toph, Moira

Just like with humans, diet is only one aspect of a healthy life for our pets. We also need to provide an active lifestyle! With smaller pets like guinea pigs, that can be difficult if their living space is super small. Giving smaller pets floor time outside their cages or a nice exercise pen to explore with fun toys can encourage them to move around and stay healthy. Check out these great ideas for taking your guinea pig playtime to the next level!

Jobu, Toph, and Moira are looking for a home where they can be their full cheerful selves! These three ladies were originally purchased from a pet store, but their family didn't fully understand their needs. They are having a ball in their foster home, getting to stretch their legs, but we'd love to see them start 2024 in their forever home! These friendly ladies are sure to "wheek" their way right into your hearts. Click their picture to apply today!
