This last week is National Walk Your Dog Week and this month is Adopt a Shelter Dog and the two remind me of one of my favorite stories that happened here at DuPage County Animal Services (DCAS). Five years ago, we started a hospice program for pets with serious health concerns but still had a great quality of life. There was a dog Malcolm who had a significant lameness in his hindleg and radiographs showed arthritis and some bone loss in his hip. Early bone cancer was on the list of possibilities but Malcolm wasn’t fazed by his lameness and continued to enjoy his walks, while on medication. A DCAS volunteer named Linda fell in love with Malcolm and took him home, not knowing how long his health would last. Often, Linda took him for his beloved walks and consequently she ended up losing significant weight herself. Her doctor was surprised at her weight loss and also by the fact that she no longer needed her medications for high blood pressure and diabetes. The beautiful takeaway is that Linda brought Malcolm home to save him, and in a way he helped save her too. Hopefully you’re enjoying the cooler weather and if you (or someone you know) need a furry companion to join you on a walk, please consider adopting a shelter dog.

The Dishwashing Divas!
When people think about volunteering at an animals shelter, they rarely think about one of our most important positions: the dishwashers. Our "Clean Crew" provides an essential task that directly affect the wellbeing of our animals, especially the dogs.

Our Xena may not have Lucy Lawless' good looks or fierce skills, but don't tell her that. Xena was originally surrendered when the landlord said she was too big. Xena has done very well with staff and volunteers, but she does need a *HOT* minute to warm up to new people. Xena loves car rides and is hoping her freedom ride arrives soon. Xena is nervous inside the shelter, but once outside her personality blooms. Click on her picture to see a video of her playing in our dog runs!
