A message from our Veterinarian AdministratorSpoil Your Pet Banner

Our focus for this month’s newsletter is Spoiling your Pet, where our goal is to show you how to make each day a little nicer for our furry companions. Recently a loving couple adopted 2 of our very large, very senior dogs (that had been relinquished together). The couple then created a bucket list for the dogs and their plan was for all of them to share time as they made special memories together. This adoption, and even the current pandemic, serves as an excellent reminder for all of us to live life to its fullest.

There’s no time like the present. We don’t have to wait until death is near to make each day a little more special for those we love. If your cat or dog had a bucket list, what would it be? What about your ferret, rat, bird, rabbit (feel free to fill in the blank)…what would be on their bucket list? Start by listing a few things that they love and then think of ways to make it even more special. If your list includes possible travel or special treats, consider checking with your veterinarian if your pet is arthritic or has a sensitive stomach.

The bucket list could be very simple and might include scheduling daily cuddle time, a family photo and maybe a picnic out in the backyard. If your dog is up for a bigger adventure then maybe a visit to a Dog Bakery, playtime with a friend or splashing in a kiddie pool (filled either with water or balls). Cats might enjoy chasing a wand toy or a laser light and often like to rest in a sunny spot. Online are many resources if you search “cat window shelves” or “cat wall furniture” if you’re looking for ideas. Just like people enjoy puzzles there are puzzles for pets, where they search for hidden treats.

Spoiling your pet doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Keeping it simple is the best idea because all they want is to spend time with their favorite person…you!

Volunteer Spotlight

Enrichment Volunteers

In honor of Spoil Your Dog Day on August 10th, we wanted to give a shout out to one of our dedicated dog volunteers, Susie (pictured left at the Pumpkin Spice Patch Day in 2019). Susie, along with another volunteer Michelle, started regularly providing enrichment for the shelter dogs over 3 years ago. Enrichment treats, puzzle toys, and other activities help decrease the dogs' stress levels. Enrichment items also help staff and volunteers get a clearer picture of each dog's personality. Seeing the joy and excitement the dogs get from their enrichment items makes it all worth while for Susie.

We know the shelter can be a scary place, but volunteers like Susie and Michelle make it an easier place to be as animals wait for their fur-ever homes. Click on the picture to see one of Susie's recent enrichment activities: whipped cream cones!
