We Love Our Volunteers!

Love was in the air this month as Orange Paw volunteers Amy, Marie, & Susie kicked off February with a Valentine's Day themed celebration! Dogs enjoyed cheese hidden in heart shaped boxes, whipped cream cups, a kissing booth, all the pink/red toys they could handle, and bacon "roses"! Cats felt the love while playing with catnip sock toys, streamers, and pipe cleaner hearts.

Still looking for a Valentine this year? Skip the chocolate and adopt the new love of your life! DCAS adoptables are single and ready to mingle. Check them out at: bit.ly/DCASAdopt

Steve

Will You Be Steve's Valentine?

He's just a boy sitting in front of you, asking you to love him. Adoptable Steve is tall, dark, and handsome. Basically, he's your dream guy and you're in luck, it just so happens he is in the market for a new someone!

A real renaissance man, Steve is always looking for new ways to improve and be his very best self. To ensure that his next relationship is the one that lasts forever Steve has enrolled in the UnderDog to WonderDog program at the shelter. Once adopted, Steve will go home with a goodie bag of training and enrichment and 3 in-home training sessions with Allie Bender from Pet Harmony, LLC

Interested in adopting? Would you like to learn more? Contact Canine Foster, Rescue, & Volunteer Coordinator Carrie at 630-407-2809 or Caroline.Rzewnicki@dupageco.org and she will be happy to answer your questions!

Training Tip: It's Not Just For Dogs!

Ivey Kiss

Training is always part of the package when you bring a new dog into your home. However, cats are often overlooked when it comes to training -but they shouldn’t be. Cats, just like dogs, can be taught desirable behaviors with positive reinforcement.

DCAS has recently been accepted into The Jackson Galaxy Project’s Cat Pawsitive Program which focuses on building new skills for shelter cats, improving adoptability, and strengthening the human-cat bond. Cats like Ivey, pictured to the left, are thriving in the program. Not only are they less stressed but they are learning useful and adorable skills. If you click on Ivey’s picture you can watch a video of her, hard at work with Dina, learning how to give kisses. In just one short session Ivey has learned a new behavior and has deepened her bond with her trainer.

The great thing about the training you can see Dina working on with Ivey is that you can do it at home with your own cats! This helpful video from Jackson Galaxy will get you started on teaching your cat amazing behaviors and strengthening your bond with your feline friend!

Jack

Loving Our Smallest Friends

We certainly see our fair share of rabbits here at DCAS. And sadly, many of the rabbits that find their way to the shelter are suffering, not because their owners intentionally neglected or harmed them, but because they were not receiving appropriate care.

Due to improper diets that limit or exclude hay and a lack of appropriate exercise many rabbits surrendered to DCAS suffer from health issues (like our friend Jack pictured below) including obesity, splayed legs, fecal caps, and many others. These issues could have been avoided with a bit of education.

We stress the importance of doing your homework before adding a pet to your home. We also know that finding reliable resources can be tricky, there is a lot of misinformation out there!

For any current or future bunny owners please check out these resources to learn all you can about meeting a rabbit's needs in a home environment. When we know better, we can do better!

Looking For Animal Lovers

Joelle-Intern

Students will benefit from participating in the DCAS internship program by gaining valuable experience in all aspects of animal sheltering from administrative to animal care. The internships at DCAS provide a beneficial tool in preparing college students for real-life work in an animal field. Internships can improve student understanding of career choices and increase chances of landing a job after graduation or moving forward into a graduate program. DCAS offers three paid internship tracks: Animal Care, Veterinary Technician, and Humane Education/Animal Control. Interns must be able to commit to a 37.5 hour work week including weekends and holidays for a period of 11 weeks beginning May 11th.
