On June 12th DCAS hosted a special ribbon cutting
ceremony for the new DCAS Specialty Veterinary Vehicle attended by dozens of
DuPage County board members, DuPage Animal Friends board members, donors,
volunteers, staff and supporters.
Immediately after the ribbon cutting, Dr. Hanek went to work stocking
and organizing the vehicle for the first surgery day. With no time wasted, on June 14th
Dr. Von Waldau stepped aboard to perform the first 11 surgeries for rescue
partner Feral Fixers! As of the writing
of this newsletter, Dr. Von Waldau and staff have performed the following:
- 22 spays
- 11 neuters
- 33 ear tips
- 33 vaccinations
- 33 flea/worm treatments
- 5 wound treatments
Additionally, the DCAS vehicle made an appearance at the
ribbon cutting ceremony for the DuPage County Forest Preserve Oldfield Oaks Dog
Park in Darien on June 19th.
And we’re looking forward to an on-air tour and interview of the vehicle
during the 11am ABC7 news!
Thank you to those who
made this game-changing vehicle possible: DuPage Animal Friends Board Director,
Amanda Yancey and the DuPage Animal
Friends Board of Directors and donors.
Stay tuned to DCAS social media for spay/neuter updates and the latest
information on where you can spot the vehicle around town.
Jack & Jill (FKA Aries & Athena) are loving life in the Great White North
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. And they’re right. Jack(black) and Jill (cream) were brought to the shelter back in March when their owner could no longer properly care for them. They stated that they had a recent move and a new baby. Both dogs were extremely matted and needed to be shaved down immediately upon intake. Right off the bat it became apparent that Jack & Jill were very bonded to each other and were nervous/anxious when separated. Both dogs... were very unsure of strangers, but quickly demonstrated they were capable of trusting those who took the time to earn their trust. DCAS staff were challenged with the task of placing them with people familiar with the breed AND with keeping them together. Anyone familiar with animal rescue knows this is a tall order. It took five weeks, a ton of cross-posting on the part of the Chow Chow rescue community and a lot of rejection, but the fine folks at Merlins Hope Rescue were not about to leave a Chow (or two) behind.
On May 1st Rescue, Foster, & Volunteer Coordinator Dina loaded up the Chows and headed off for Michigan to meet with a Merlins Hope Rescue representative that would take the Chows on the second leg of their journey to a new life in the Great White North. Once Jack & Jill arrived in Canada they were taken in by a loving foster family that helped them acclimate to their new life and shortly after Jack & Jill were adopted!
Congratulations Jack & Jill on becoming Canada's floofiest residents! Enjoy your new family! Happy Tails!

The Under Dog to Wonder Dog program is a brand new initiative designed to help select dogs that need additional support to find their forever homes. Each Under Dog is set up for success in their future home with a personalized training plan, adoption counseling for potential new families, 3 in-home training sessions with a professional dog trainer, and 3 months of phone and email follow up consultations. Additionally, Under Dogs are sent home with a care package that includes: a Kong Wobbler enrichment toy, a Nylabone chew toy, a Freedom harness leash and harness set, a martingale collar, and A Sound Beginning book & CD. The Under Dog to Wonder Dog adoption package has been made possible by the generous donors of the DuPage Animal Friends.
The program began with 5 Under Dogs and now only Craig is left looking for his forever home. Craig has been at the shelter for over 180 days waiting for his happily ever after. That's 6 months, 3 seasons, and far too long. We need YOUR help to find Craig his forever home. We need YOU to spread the word and help Craig find a home. To help you out we have this amazing video of Craig made by Adriana, an animal caretaker. Click on Craig's picture to go to his adoption bio and learn all about this amazing pocket-sized pittie boy!

Fostering save lives and Bubbz needs a lifesaver!
Bubbz is a one year old dog in need of foster. He is a
husky mix that looks like the cutest miniature husky. He is young,
approximately a year old; and he weighs a whopping 33 pounds. Bubbz is
cute and friendly and social. When Bubbz was getting his medical work up
it was discovered that he is infected with heartworm. Luckily the disease
was caught and he can be treated ASAP. Unfortunately for Bubbz this means
that he needs to go through a minimum of two months of treatment before he will be available
for adoption. We are looking for a calm and quiet foster home where Bubbz
can undergo treatment. Ideally there would be no other dogs (since he’s
not allowed to wrestle and play right now) and no cats (since he might like to
chase them). If there are other animals in the home, you will just need a
way to separate so that Bubbz can remain calm and quiet.
DuPage County Animal Services will provide all medical care,
food, a crate and any supplies needed for caring for him. Bubbz will need to be
kept calm and be on limited activity. Fosters will have to be able to bring Bubbz into the shelter as needed for medical treatment. If you can offer Bubbz the respite that
he needs, please let us know. He is stressed in the kennel and would love
to get out ASAP!

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that attacks the nervous system. Rabies can be transmitted via contact (typically through a bite) with saliva or tissues from the nervous system of an infected animal. Rabies is a zoonotic disease which means it can be passed between species (including humans).
The spread of rabies is most effectively controlled by vaccinating your domestic pets against the disease. Keeping your animal up-to-date with vaccinations is not only essential to prevention, it is the law. All dogs and cats in DuPage County are required by law to be currently vaccinated against rabies.

The first two weeks of summer camp have been a rousing success! Young Animal Advocates met with The PuppyMill Project and learned how to stand up for dogs in need, toured an Animal Control Officer van and learned how DCAS officers protect the animals of DuPage County, and exercised their own detective skills as mock Humane Investigators! Aspiring Animal Doctors learned how to perform CPR and emergency first aid on pets, sutured "injured" bananas, and performed mock spay surgeries!
There is still more fun to be had this summer! DCAS is still accepting registrations for the other fun and engaging animal education day camps offered this summer! For more information visit: https://www.dupageco.org/AnimalServices/Programs/
