Last month we announced that
DuPage County Animal Care and Control official became DuPage County Animal
Services. THIS month we’re proud to
reveal DCAS’ new logo! The logo is the
result of months of gathering and weighing feedback received from you our
supporters, reviewing trends in animal sheltering, and holding discussions with
staff and key stakeholders about our vision for DCAS. The result is a name and logo that represents
DCAS’ commitment to animals, commitment to the community, and diversity of
animals that DCAS serves. It also
represents our vision for providing care and stewardship for animals by caring
for people. We would like to personally
thank volunteer graphic designer Dan Peck for so perfectly capturing the
essence of this vision and for making it its design a truly exciting and
enjoyable process. We hope you are just
as excited about DuPage County Animal Service’s new name and logo as we
are. Many thanks to all who participated
in this journey of self-discovery with us.
We look forward to saving many more animals and serving many more people
together well into the future!
You will gradually see our
new logo replace the former logo in various locations. This transition will take some time before it
is completed. Thank you for your
patience!
Officer Smith and Dr Hanek giving the rescued ducklings some much needed cuddles
On May 8th DuPage County Animal Services Officers received a call about ducklings stuck in a sewer in the parking lot of the Glen Ellyn Walmart. With the assistance of Walmart staff and the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department who came out to assist DCAS in removing the sewer cap, Dr. Hanek and Officer Smith successfully removed a total of seven ducklings from the sewer while momma duck stood by watching their every move. After freeing them from the drain, ...the ducklings were carried to a nearby pond (with momma following every step of the way) where the family was successfully reunited. Thank you to the compassionate Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department officers and Walmart staff for helping DCAS make this reunion possible!

With spring upon us it is highly likely that you may stumble across wild baby animals. Some may need your help while others are doing just fine on their own. Not sure when to step in? Refer to the guidelines provided by the Humane Society of the United States for answers!

DCAS’ long-awaited specialty veterinary vehicle is due to arrive on June 6th and we couldn’t be more excited! The vehicle’s first public appearance took place last week in Kansas City where it was showcased at the Humane Society of the United States Animal Care Expo. For the first time ever, DCAS will be able to provide targeted mobile spay/neuter and veterinary services, provide medical assistance via emergency disaster response, and mobilize our humane education and adoption efforts. This vehicle is a game-changer for animals in and around DuPage County.
A formal ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for 11:30am on Tuesday, June 12th at DCAS and YOU’RE INVITED! Following speaker remarks and ribbon cutting, staff will be giving tours of the vehicle to those who are interested in seeing this life-saving vehicle up close and personal.
We couldn’t be more grateful to DuPage Animal Friends Board Director Amanda Yancey, the Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy, and the DuPage Animal Friends for making this life-saving vehicle possible. And to the generous donors of DuPage Animal Friends who, through their donations, have helped to supply the vehicle with life-saving medical equipment and supplies. Be sure to follow DCAS on social media for updates on the DCAS vehicle in use and look for it around town this summer and fall!
Take a virtual tour of the new DCAS Specialty Veterinary Vehicle with Veterinary Administrator Dr. Hanek here and be sure to stop by on June 12th for a ribbon cutting ceremony!

DuPage County Animal Services is an immediate, open-admission
shelter. This means that any domestic animal brought through the shelter doors
will be accepted regardless of age, cage space availability, temperament, or
medical condition. Being an open admission facility, we are often brought animals
that are very unhealthy and/or refused by limited admission shelters and
rescues. For these animals, their state of mental and/or physical health possibly
makes them unsuitable for adoption. In order to address these concerns and help
create positive outcomes for animals wherever possible, we consult with a board
certified veterinary behavioral specialist, work with certified dog trainers,
have created a hospice program, developed an Under Dog to Wonder Dog program,
and most recently launched a Working Cat placement program for feral cats. Much of this work is made possible by the
generous donors of DuPage Animal Friends.
DCACC’s
Live Release Rate, or LRR (the percentage of animals taken in that are
successfully rehomed), increased from approximately 70% in 2015 to over 76% in
2017. While we are happy that more lives are being saved, we will not be
satisfied until all Healthy, Manageable and Treatable* animals will eventually
be in loving, responsible forever homes.
We also strive to treat the Unhealthy to make them strong enough so they
too can find a forever home through adoption.
In
an effort to increase transparency, this summer DCAS will begin publishing our
animal sheltering statistics on a quarterly basis to keep you apprised of our
successes, challenges, and where we need your assistance with saving lives.
*
Healthy, Unhealthy, Manageable and Treatable are terms used to define animal
outcomes as outlined in the Asilomar Accords.

Release Rate, visit: https://www.shelteranimalscount.org/docs/default-source/DataResources/2004aaccords5.pdf?sfvrsn=0
