A Message from the Director

Dear Veterans:

This newsletter contains information about services and benefits you have earned because of your honorable service to our nation.

September is a very busy month for veterans. Life can be tough as we head towards fall and the holiday season. September is National Suicide Prevention Month. There are programs available to veterans who are suffering from PTSD. Please check out additional information in the ‘Useful Links’ section of this newsletter.

None of us should ever forget what happen on September 11, 2001. It is identified as Patriot Day to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on that day. We commemorate 9/11 with all those impacted by the attacks on our nation.

September 20 has been designated as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. We remember those who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action.

Sunday, September 29 has been designated Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day. We recognize the courage and sacrifice that our nation’s Gold Star families have made. We must do everything we can to honor them and their loved ones.

We continue to get questions from many of the veterans who are in the National Guard and Reserve asking what benefits they have earned. Please see information about your benefits in the ‘Useful Links’ section in this newsletter.

Cook County Veterans Affairs encourages you to share this information with other veterans and their dependents, and to use this newsletter as a reference tool for upcoming veteran activities, events and workshops.
Please visit the Cook County Veterans Affairs website at http://www.cookcountyil.gov/agency/veterans-affairs
