Circular Living Week
Moving from a linear economy towards a Circular Economy
Circular Living Week 2025 took place from the 1st to 8th October. The week-long social and digital campaign, was designed to raise awareness and deepen public engagement with circular economy practices.
Unlike the traditional linear economy of “take, make, dispose,” the circular economy focuses on minimising waste and maximising the value of existing resources. Circular Living Week spotlighted practical ways individuals and communities can contribute to a more sustainable future.
Throughout the week, the campaign highlighted themes such as mindful consumption, repair & maintain, community engagement and rent & borrow. On 8th October, the campaign culminated with a special focus on textiles, in support of World Textile Day.
Make One Change
60 events scheduled across Cork County Council libraries
Cork County Library branches are stepping up their commitment to environmental sustainability with the launch of the ambitious "Make One Change" campaign this November. With over 60 events scheduled across the county, the initiative aims to empower citizens to adopt simple, yet impactful, sustainable practices in their daily lives.
Cork County Council is championing this drive, ensuring that the library network serves as a hub for environmental education and community action. The campaign features a packed programme including workshops, expert talks, VR headset demonstrations, and competitions, all focused on securing a sustainable environment for future generations.
Key Themes: From Fashion to Farming
The selected events showcase the diverse range of topics being tackled, highlighting how making one small change can contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle:
Focus on Waste Reduction and Sustainable Fashion
Several events are dedicated to tackling consumption and waste. Carrigaline Library will host a session with Voice Ireland on waste reduction and textiles on November 5th. The growing movement of sustainable clothing is also a major theme, with Skibbereen Library hosting a "Slow Fashion" event with Ana Ospina on November 28th and Mitchelstown Library exploring "Ethical Fashion" with Susan Cabeza's of Self-Help Africa on November 6th. Meanwhile, Mallow Library is catering to new parents with a Cloth Nappy Library Ireland demonstration on November 29th.
Ecology, Biodiversity, and Green Living
Events are designed to reconnect the community with local ecosystems. Participants can learn about the importance of native flora and fauna with a "Tree workshop" by Hazel Murphy at Clonakilty Library and a fascinating session on the "Boglands of Ireland" with Ciara Moynihan at Mitchelstown Library, both on November 6th and 13th, respectively. For practical green skills, Skibbereen Library offers an "Eco friendly soap making" workshop on November 13th, and Mallow Library invites people to a "Drop, swap and grow" session with John Reihill on November 12th.
Climate Action and Community Safety
The campaign also highlights innovative climate solutions and community well-being. Bandon Library will host a presentation on November 18th about "Farm Zero", detailing Ireland’s first carbon neutral farm, presented by Ellen Hurley.
Reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable transport, Midleton and Bandon Libraries will feature Cycle Safety and Pedestrian Safety Talks by Caroline Casey of Cork County Council. The creative side of activism is on show at Macroom Library with a "Rubbish Film Festival" screening on November 19th, showcasing short films on sustainability created by local TY students.
The Make One Change campaign invites everyone in Cork County to engage with the library network and commit to a more sustainable lifestyle. The full schedule of events will be available soon on the Cork County Library website.
