Idaho State Legislture

April 6, 2016

Rep. Ronald Nate - District 34

Idaho House of Representatives

A Final 2016 Session Update

With the 2016 Legislative Session in the books, there is not much to "update" in this Legislative Update.  However, as you may have heard, in the days following the session, the governor did sign two important bills I had been working toward: Permitless Carry and the Ultrasound Information Act.  I am excited to see Idahoans' 2nd Amendment rights more fully protected and also the opportunities increased for mothers to be fully informed before consenting to abortion.  Those two laws alone made the session a success!

Getting to Work on the 2017 Session

Rep. Ron Nate - House debate

Followers of the Idaho Legislature know sessions begin in early January and usually end in late March or sometime in April. Proposed bills either meet approval or die during those months.  However, most successful legislation begins its journey in the months between sessions.  From April through December, legislators, constituents, and legal advisers work on drafting and perfecting legislation to be considered in the next session.

Now is a very good time to contact your legislators for getting to work on legislation for the 2017 Legislature.  Several interested citizens have already contacted me about proposing laws or changes in laws. I am eager to hear from you too!!   Please let me know if you have an issue needing consideration or of a proposed law change we can work on together.  Getting started early is often the key to producing a good bill and building support for it to be approved in the next legislative session.

As I look forward to re-election, I have already begun work on some ideas citizens and I have for proposed bills in the 2017 session.  Here is a short list of some of the things I will be exploring and working toward:

  • Repealing state Common Core requirements
  • Removing the state sales tax on grocery purchases
  • Protecting the unborn from "dismemberment abortions"
  • Extending Idaho permitless carry to non-residents
  • Repealing state SBAC test requirements
  • Expanding education options for parents, students, and teachers
  • Daylight savings time or standard time?
  • Rules to require more bills be heard by committees
  • Work/education expectations for food stamp recipients
  • Homeowner rights and forced annexation
  • Removing government licensing for marriage
  • Requiring constitutional affirmations for proposed legislation
  • Setting legislator gift limits and reporting standards

If you have ideas or suggestions for laws to propose or change, please contact me here:  nater@house.idaho.gov .

Stay in Touch!

As always my goals are to best represent District 34’s views and interests, keep my oath to protect and defend the U.S. and State Constitutions, restrain government influence, keep taxes low, and support legislation that is constitutional, economical, and moral.  I always appreciate feedback from voters and citizens.  As you probably know, citizen input is very important and influential.  When you and others contact legislators, they have the power and incentives to protect rights and keep their oaths.  Together, we can keep Idaho great and free.
