State Fire Marshal: Use thermostatically controlled devices to keep animals warm

A recent fire in Cataldo, Idaho was investigated by the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office. The fire was caused by a heat lamp, used to warm a number of reptiles and other animals. Unfortunately, most of the resident’s pets perished in the fire.

Now that baby chicks are available at your local agricultural store, the State Fire Marshal's Office is urging homeowners to consider using heat mats or other thermostatically controlled device, rather than using heat lamps. These appliances are designed specifically for brooding chickens and other small critters.

Every year, the SFM office investigates a large number of fires caused by heat lamps or extension cord failures.

Deputy Fire Marshal earns two significant designations

Deputy Fire Marshal Josh Masterson (pictured above) has achieved the designations of Evidence Collection Technician and Certified Fire Investigator through the International Association of Arson Investigators.

This accomplishment involves countless hours of study, training, and on-the-job experience. Josh has elevated not only himself, but the State Fire Marshal's Office as well. Congratulations Josh!

Basic Fire Investigation class in Grangeville

This month, students were tasked to identify the origin and cause of the fire in their assigned burn cell, using scientific methods and other techniques taught by the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Many thanks to the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho County Search and Rescue, and Grangeville Fire Department for hosting this interesting and important class. In addition to members from the host agencies, students were also from Cottonwood and White Bird Fire Departments.
