In Johnson County, 78 percent of adults believe global warming is happening. |
|
|
Despite that, only 35 percent of Johnson County adults report discussing global warming at least occasionally. |

Americans are more than four times as likely to take a climate action when it is suggested by a friend or family member instead of a political or community leader. |

Visitors to Iowa City properties and parks may have noticed 34 new homes: nesting boxes for bluebirds, flickers, and wood ducks. Using recycled street signposts salvaged from Streets and Traffic Engineering, City Forestry staff began installing these bird boxes starting in late 2020. As of March, 20 of the boxes were found to be inhabited by birds. Look for boxes six to eight inches long for the Eastern Bluebird, 12-14 inches long for the Northern Flicker, and 19-21 inches long for the Wood Duck in Iowa City parks.
In March, eight Iowa City residents completed an 8-week training course to join the ranks of Iowa City’s Climate Ambassadors.
The City wishes to recognize Blaise Boles, Sara Cavic, Mahmud Fitil, Zach Haralson, Gabrielle Healey, Hailey Quinn, Eric Thomas, and Patricia Valderrama for their hard work and commitment to taking climate action.
As part of the program, Climate Ambassadors took a deep dive into all five sections of the City’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, learned effective climate communication strategies, and participated in weekly discussions.
For more information on the program, visit icgov.org/ClimateAmbassadors.
THIS MONTH'S
A cohort of Gen Z influencers are rejecting doom-based messaging and focusing instead on climate solutions.
Mary Annaïse Heglar, a climate essayist and co-host of the “Hot Take” podcast and newsletter, says the question that matters is not "Are we going to win?" but rather "Are we going to try?" She points out "We don’t know till we try if we’re going to win. Whether or not we do, it will still have been worth it.”
Other TikTok creators with the handles @thegarbagequeen, @queerbrownvegan, @trashCaulin, and @browngirl_green are seeing a growing number of followers who want to focus on positive avenues to make a difference.
