Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program
It's farmer's market season! Farmer's markets are a great places to access fresh fruits and vegetables, socialize with neighbors, and support local farmers; all of which benefits our health, physically, socially, and financially.
The Dallas County Health Navigation team assists Aging Resources of Central Iowa in recruiting and registering older adults for the Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program each spring. This program provides $50 to income-eligible, older adults that can be spent at participating farmers' markets and roadside stands. Eligible purchases include fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, and honey from Iowa producers.
In Dallas County, there are three steps to participating in the SFMNP:
- Call 515-993-3750 to complete an application over the phone. A Health Navigator will confirm your eligibility and ask a few screening questions to see if there are additional programs you may be interested in.
- Pick checks up at one of four locations. Drive-thru events will be held in Adel, Perry, and Waukee the first week of June. Check can also be picked up at the Dallas County Health Department. At pick up, Health Navigators will collect a signature and provide the checks and information on local markets.
- Go shopping! The money can be used to purchase produce from June 1 through October 31st.
To be eligible for the SFMNP, an individual must:
- Be 60 year of age or older
- Live in Dallas County
- Have a yearly income within the following guidelines:
- For a single individual, yearly income must be at or below $27,861
- For a married couple, the combined yearly income must be less than $37,814
