Several of the Department’s bills continued to progress through the Legislature in week 4 of session. In the House, two bills were moved to the floor:
- House Study Bill 567, which authorizes the Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) to refer investigative information to law enforcement if the information indicates a crime has been committed, passed and was renumbered House File 2270.
- HSB564, related to the time in which the BOEE can investigate complaints alleging romantic or otherwise inappropriate relationships with a student by exempting such allegations from the current three year statute of limitation, passed and was renumbered HF2261.
The Senate Education Committee took up the following Department bills:
- Senate Study Bill 3049, regarding modifications to the transitional coaching authorization, passed with amendment and was renumbered Senate File 2185.
- SSB3044, related to modifications to the therapeutic classroom transportation reimbursement claims appropriation, passed and was renumbered SF2189.
- SSB3046, which makes changes to the reporting requirements for the Workforce Training and Economic Development Fund program, passed and was renumbered SF2188.
- SSB3045, clarifying the process through which the State Board of Education adopts state content standards, passed and was renumbered SF2192.
On Wednesday, January 31 both the House and Senate held subcommittees to consider the Governor’s proposal to increase starting pay of new teachers to $50,000 and $62,000 for experienced teachers, and align the Area Education Agencies. The Senate subcommittee recommended passage of SSB3073 and the House subcommittee did not take formal action on HSB542.
Two more of the Governor’s education bills were introduced this week:

HSB650, related to elementary literacy instruction, was introduced on February 1 in the House; and
-
SSB3143, related to work-based learning and other workforce-related initiatives, was introduced on February 1 in the Senate.
