Week 2 of the 2024 session came to a snowy conclusion on Thursday, with both Chambers adjourning until Monday afternoon.
Yesterday morning, Governor Reynolds provided an update on her proposed legislation: “Governor Reynolds, Legislators making progress on AEA reform bill.” Per that update, “An amendment will propose automatically shifting control of state and federal special education funding from the AEAs to Iowa’s public school districts. It will also allow schools to retain their share of AEA funding for general education services.”
This week, both the House and Senate Education committees met and received a presentation from the Iowa Reading Research Center, during which representatives from the Center discussed their work related to the Science of Reading and support for students with dyslexia. Also, the House Education Appropriations subcommittee met on Wednesday morning to hear from the Legislative Services Agency on the Governor’s proposed fiscal year 2025 education budget.
As mentioned last week, the Department has several bills under consideration by the Legislature. All 10 bills were introduced in the Senate last week, with the House introducing all 10 this week. On Thursday, the Senate held a subcommittee on Senate Study Bill 3049 related to modifications to the transitional coaching authorization. The subcommittee recommended passage of the bill, with amendment.
Below you will find a list of the Department’s bills, including the assigned bill numbers for both the House and Senate versions.
I will continue to provide an update on legislative activity on our radar throughout the session, but please contact me with any questions.
