The Iowa Department of Education is seeking nominations for outstanding high school seniors for the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars selection cycle. Nominations are encouraged for students who, while demonstrating outstanding scholarship, might not otherwise be nominated through the current SAT/ACT, arts or Career and Technical Education (CTE) recognition processes.
Students can be nominated through the Department’s online General Component Presidential Scholar Nomination form or the CTE Component Presidential Scholar Nomination form by Sept. 29.
Department Director McKenzie Snow will select up to 25 students to submit to the U.S. Presidential Scholar Program for consideration. The 2024 Presidential Scholars will be selected by the Commission on Presidential Scholars and will receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion at a ceremony, held in their honor, in Washington, D.C.
The CTE component of the program will honor students on the basis of outstanding scholarship and demonstrated ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Specific information to be included in each nomination is described on the Department’s online General Component Presidential Scholar Nomination form and the CTE Component Presidential Scholar Nomination form. Nominations must be submitted no later than Sept. 29.

As you settle into the new school year, now is the time for School Food Authorities (SFAs) participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and/or School Breakfast Program (SBP) to mark your calendar for two upcoming requirements, both due Nov. 15: completion of the Site Enrollment section in IowaCNP and verification of households receiving free or reduced price meal benefits.
Site enrollment is a report of students eligible for free and reduced price meals as of the last day of operation in October, including students on the October Direct Certification (DC) lists. The report is due by November 15.
USDA also requires SFAs to verify 3% of the households that are receiving free or reduced price meal benefits. The households selected for verification must be selected as of October 1 and the verification process must be completed by November 15. For additional training, a webinar covering the verification process is scheduled for September 18 at 1:30 p.m. and a webinar covering verification reporting is scheduled for October 16 at 1:30 p.m.
The Iowa Department of Education offers several ways to stay informed about the USDA School Nutrition Programs, including the monthly News to Know webinars, offered the 4th Monday of each month at 2:00 p.m., School Meal Program govDelivery emails sent from the email address IADeptofEd@public.govdelivery.com, and many other resources that can be found on the School Meals webpage. For more information, reach out to your assigned regional school nutrition consultant.
Students are urged to apply for the United States Senate Youth Program, which is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service.
The annual program will be held in Washington, D.C., from March 2-9, 2024. Two student leaders from each state, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity will gather for an intensive week-long study of government and those who lead it. In addition, each selected delegate receives a $10,000 scholarship.
There are numerous deadlines in applying for the program, the first of which is Sept. 29, 2023. Additional program information, including the student application, can be found on the U.S. Senate Youth Program webpage.

United States Constitution Day is Sept. 17 of each year. Congress enacted legislation requiring all public schools to set aside one day during the week of Sept. 17 to teach all students about the U.S. Constitution and about citizenship. See Constitution Day resources.
Additionally, the Iowa Supreme Court invites classrooms to visit on Sept. 14. Students will get the opportunity to hear oral arguments and speak with judges about the Constitution and the judicial branch. There are morning and afternoon sessions available. If you are interested in participating in this opportunity, contact Stefanie Wager at stefanie.wager@iowa.gov or 515-419-2876.
