We have opened up an additional day of learning opportunities!
Join us on June 15 for an exciting day of training workshops designed to help teachers deepen their learning. Our expert trainers will provide hands-on guidance on several different topics so you can choose the all-day workshop that is right for you. These training workshops were originally offered via invitation only, but we’re pleased to extend the opportunity for all participants.
The day-long workshops on June 15 follow the Teaching for Impact training on June 13 and 14 where you can choose from a variety of 90-minute training sessions across several content areas. Space is still available for all three days.
Each workshop will take place at the Iowa Events Center, 730 3rd St., Des Moines from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided. There is no cost to participants.
View more information about the specific workshops and register before the June 5 deadline!
Teaching for Impact is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Education and the Iowa Area Education Agencies.
On June 15, 2023 an attendance-focused workshop will be offered. This professional learning event, Attendance Works: Advancing Student Success by Reducing Chronic Absenteeism, is presented by Hedy Chang from Attendance Works. This training is a collaborative offering from the Area Education Agency and Department of Education.
This session is designed to be highly interactive and will offer opportunities for participants to review their own data and explore implications for action in their own districts and schools. Improving attendance and academic outcomes for all students requires schools to provide engaging, welcoming and supportive environments and to use proactive problem-solving approaches when absences first occur.
We hope your school district views this as an opportunity to build local knowledge of, and capacity to, increase and sustain student attendance. Registration is available at: Attendance Works: Advancing Student Success by Reducing Chronic Absenteeism (Click the orange “Get Ticket” button to reserve seats then indicate number of attendees and provide information for each ticket reserved).
We ask that no more than 8 people attend from your district or building team. Registration will be open until room capacity of 300 is reached.

On July 31, 2018, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, or Perkins V, became law. This federal law reauthorized the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006, providing nearly $1.43 billion in federal funding for CTE programs in all 50 states and territories, including integrated career pathway programs for students. The state of Iowa receives nearly $13.9 million in federal funding annually to support both secondary and postsecondary CTE programs.
The purpose of the Strengthening Career and Technical Education Act for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) is to develop more fully the academic knowledge and technical and employability skills of secondary education students and postsecondary education students who elect to enroll in career and technical education programs and programs of study.
You can find the FY24 Perkins V application under funding opportunities at www.iowagrants.gov.
The funding opportunity is open, and the application deadline is June 30, 2023.
The following guidance, memos, and videos provide more information and assistance in completing the application.

Iowa's State Plan
Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, districts are no longer asked to complete an End-of-Year TLC Report that is submitted to the Department.
Districts are encouraged to review their data and program evaluation for a district report. A local report serves as an opportunity for districts to reflect on their progress toward the vision and goals of their TLC plan.
Past District End-of-Year Reports are still available for the 2016-17 through the 2021-22 school years.
Region 9 Comprehensive Center is planning a learning event for Friday, June 16th from 9am – 1pm.
This event will serve as a great professional learning opportunity as well as a kick-off for an upcoming community of practice (CoP) being planned for district leadership teams in Iowa. Researchers and national experts in multiple topic areas will share the latest research and lead discussions with participants to help identify a set of common problems of practice related to supporting student learning.
A few topics of interest include:
- Determining Cost- and Program Effectiveness of School and District Improvement Initiatives
- Addressing Teacher and Staff Shortages
- Learning from Evidence: The Road to Recovery Project (Keynote featuring CALDER Center Director, Dan Goldhaber)
