Choose Iowa Student Culinary Competition

Culinary Competition

The Iowa Department of Education is hosting a Choose Iowa Culinary Competition for students enrolled in a culinary arts class or foods based course. Students learning virtually, hybrid, or in person are eligible to participate. The concept for the competition is to plan a student-friendly recipe that features a local food item, can be replicated in large quantities, and follows the USDA school meal guidelines.

The student(s) that submit one of the top 12 recipes will be invited to be part of a culinary competition to be held late Spring 2021. In addition, the school will receive a $2,000 sub-grant to support collaborative activities with their school nutrition program. The recipes will be tested and standardized to be utilized by school nutrition programs across the state and country.

The deadline to submit entries is March 1st, 2021. For more information contact Carrie at carrie.scheidel@iowa.gov or visit the Iowa Team Nutrition webpage

School Meal Promotion Resources

USDA has extended free meals to children for the rest of the 2020-2021 school year for schools participating in the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Regardless of household income, all children can access free and nutritious school breakfast and lunch each day. Participation in school meal programs is important for several reasons:

  • School meals help address the increased food insecurity many families are facing.
  • School meal programs allow children to have access to nutritious foods
  • Students who eat school meals have better overall diet quality than students who do not.
  • More participation in school meal programs means more funding for school nutrition programs.

To help spread the word that school meals are for all children, CDC has developed a toolkit that contains sample social media posts, graphics, and newsletter text for you to use in your own communication efforts.
