HF 2629 was signed into law in June. The legislation, relating to the future ready Iowa act and other efforts to strengthen Iowa's workforce, includes provisions for computer science. What you need to know:
- Computer science instruction incorporating the standards shall be taught, beginning July 1, 2023, in at least one grade level 1-6.
- Computer science instruction incorporating the standards shall be offered, beginning July 1, 2023, in at least one grade level 7-8.
- One-half unit of computer science incorporating the standards shall be offered, beginning July 1, 2022 in high school.
- Each public school district and nonpublic school shall develop and implement a K-12 computer science plan by July 1, 2022.
The ITEC Fall Conference is moving forward, October 12-13 in Des Moines. They hope to provide for an in person event; however, they are working on options for a virtual as well as a hybrid experience should those options be necessary due to COVID concerns in October. |

Secretary DeVos Challenges Educators to Rethink Education Options for Rural High School Students Amid Coronavirus Pandemic
WASHINGTON - As part of her continuing charge to state and local education leaders to rethink school, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced today a challenge to advance high-quality technology instruction in rural communities. The Rural Tech Project, with a total cash prize pool of $600,000, invites high schools and local educational agencies (LEAs) to develop competency-based distance learning programs that enable students to master skills at their own pace with the goal of preparing them for the well-paying, in-demand jobs of today and tomorrow.

At the start of the Spring 2020 semester, Plano ISD began planning for its first in-person Computer Science Summer Bridge Program. The goal was to engage with our Hispanic and African-American students, especially our girls. In early May, the district’s senior leadership allowed us to move forward with a changed virtual program.
