19th Amendment Centennial Curriculum from Iowa's Hard Won Not Done committee
Iowa's Hard Won, Not Done committee has released a 19th Amendment Centennial Curriculum as part of the Iowa 19th Amendment Centennial Commemoration Project.
The curriculum includes teacher-directed lesson plans along with supplementary material. Lessons have been aligned with Iowa’s Social Studies Standards. Lessons are designed, primarily, for 9-12 social studies classes including 6 lessons with a two-day span each. Lessons also would work in 7-8 classes. Much of the material could also be presented in English or TAG classes. One lesson, in particular, highlights Iowa’s role in the Suffrage Movement.
Lessons have been designed to allow for flexibility with consideration for different classes. Selections of primary and secondary sources related to the 19th Amendment in a variety of formats accompany every lesson; teachers should feel free to select material from that provided to fit their own classroom needs. Lessons can be presented individually or as part of an ongoing unit.

HOLLY HOFFMAN HEADLINES METRO WOMEN CONNECT WORKSHOP
Holly Hoffman, motivational speaker, author, and the last woman standing on Season 21 of Survivor, will host a half-day workshop presented by Metro Women Connect, a program of Women Lead Change, on Wednesday, March 11, 2020. Tickets are $75/person and includes continental breakfast and the workshop from 8:00 - 11:30 a.m. at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown (700 Grand Ave.). In Don’t Just Survive-Thrive, Hoffman addresses the fact that we are challenged every day, but it is how we choose to overcome challenges that make us who we are and how we develop our leadership skills.
During this workshop participants will learn:
-
The importance of taking opportunities
-
How to deal with adversity and change
-
Understanding the value of relationships
Hoffman was the last remaining member of the Espada Tribe and the last woman standing on Season 21 of CBS’ hit reality show Survivor Nicaragua.
Through that experience and others throughout her life, Hoffman was inspired to share her message of positivity, determination, and confidence with business leaders, teachers, and students across the nation.
A professional motivational speaker and the author of Your Winner Within, Hoffman acknowledges that life is made up of challenges, and we are oftentimes faced with situations that seem insurmountable. But within each of us is an ability to focus our thoughts, emotions, and energy to succeed—if only we have the knowledge, tools, and discipline to do so.
