P.E. & Health Resources and School Visits!

PE and Health Standards

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) includes health and physical education as part of a "well-rounded" education that should be offered to all students. With new recommended standards for health and physical education, the Iowa Department of Education is working with a statewide leadership team to develop resources to support schools in their implementation.

New tools and resources will be shared via this newsletter, IAHealth&PhysEd on Twitter, and the DE Physical Education and Health Education webpage. Check out the newest resource Guidance for Physical Education Standards!

The Health and Physical Education Consultant is looking to visit programs across Iowa. Please contact Lyn Jenkins at lyn.jenkins@iowa.gov with questions or to invite her to visit.

Brain Breaks Resources!

Children need at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day to support overall health. Most children fall short of this goal. Lack of physical activity can impact a child's ability to do well in school. It can affect their memory, attention span, school attendance and grades.

Along with recess and physical education class, a 3-5 minute "brain break" can help students be more active. Iowa Department of Public Health has two resource books that include a collection of classroom activity ideas. Check them out!

Did You Know? Sugar-Free Gum is Allowable!

chewing gum

The USDA Smart Snack Standards are required for all foods and beverages sold to students before, during and 30 minutes after school. The standards apply to all organizations selling foods or beverages, even student run stores. There are often requests for ideas of items that are allowable. Sugar-free gum is exempt from the nutrition standards and can be sold to students! Please check local policies on gum prior to selling.

For a list of resources and Smart Snack approved recipes visit the Iowa Department of Education's Smart Snack webpage. Questions? Contact Carrie at carrie.scheidel@iowa.gov.
