Back to School $500 Sub-Grants

Make 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count part of your Back to School plans by applying for a $500 sub-grant to support school wellness policy implementation. Ideas include:

  • Taste testing at back to school events
  • In-class physical activity break items;
  • School garden supplies;
  • Promote the consumption of water;
  • Nutrition education (books, posters, drama play, learning tools); 
  • Promote school breakfast and lunch through signage, flyers, videos;
  • Equipment to support food demonstrations; and more!

Deadline to apply: Monday, July 15th. Sub-grant Application. Funds must be spent by September 15th, 2019. Questions, contact Carrie at carrie.scheidel@iowa.gov.

99 Parks Challenge 

Happy Summer! Travel Iowa has put together some great resources to explore the state of Iowa this summer! 

Park List: identifies a park to visit in each county and includes the park features.

Family Fun Pack: contains 14 different educational activities families can use to guide their exploration of the outdoors. Including scavenger hunts and Geocaching.

Car Fun Pack: great collection of resources to keep screens at bay while traveling. A favorite of my family is the County BINGO!

Additional Resources: Fishing 101 Guide, Get Moving Guide, Camping and Picnic Recipes, and a Field Trip Guide for Educators.

Welcome Lyn Jenkins!

The State Board of Education has adopted physical education and health standards for K-12 students. To support the implementation, the Department of Education has hired a Physical Education and Health Consultant. 

Lyn Jenkins is a Certified Health Education Specialist with a MPH and BS in Health and Human Performance. She has experience in creating and leading professional development with schools, early care sites, and out-of-school programs on a variety of health and physical education topics. Lyn will be working to update an online presence for PE and Health resources and convene a state-wide leadership team.

Yoga for Kids - Dubuque CSD

Dubuque CSD has incorporated yoga into the elementary schools reaching more than 3,000 students that includes poses, breath work, and mindfulness practices.

Youth Regional Chili Cook-Offs

Iowa 4-H Youth Development is partnering with the International Chili Society to bring a fun and new cooking competition to youth audiences (ages 10-17) across the state of Iowa. There are three cook-offs remaining:

  • July 13 - Spencer (Riverfront Farmers Market)
  • August 24 - Decorah (Winneshiek Co. Fair Grounds)
  • August 25 - Sioux City (Southern Hills Mall)

The Iowa Farm to School Conference

The conference was held on June 21st at Central College.  Cal Community School District attended and lead a breakout session on highlighting their Go Green Learning Garden. To view presentations from the conference visit ISU Extension.

The End of the Healthier US School Challenge Award

HUSSC Awards

The HealthierUS School Challenge is an award program established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to recognize schools creating healthier school environments through promotion of good nutrition and physical activity.

Over 10,700 schools across the country have been awarded with this recognition. With the development of similar national and state level recognition programs, USDA has ended this award program. The last Iowa schools to receive this award were recognized at the Managers Update training in June. Congratulations to the 158 Iowa schools that have received a HealthierUS School Challenge Award since 2008!
