MEMORANDUM
To:
Iowa Reporters and Editors
Fr:
Mike Naig, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture
Re:
President’s announcement on year round E15
Iowa
Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig issued the following statement regarding President
Trump’s announcement that he is directing EPA to allow year round sales of E15
(a fuel with 15 percent ethanol) to all 2001 and newer vehicles. The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) previously limited the sale of E15 during
summer months to only flex-fuel vehicles.
“This
is great news for our farmers who need strong, stable markets for their
products. Year-round access to E15 provides customers with a cleaner-burning,
lower-cost option at the pump and has the potential to drive demand for an
additional 2 billion bushels of corn nationwide. Retailers are also now able to
sell and promote E15 knowing they will be able to offer it year round.
“This
action, when combined with the recent breakthrough on trade negotiations with
Canada and Mexico, is an important step that can help drive demand for our ag
products. There is still much work to be
done and I will continue to work closely with our congressional delegation and
Governor Reynolds to make sure Iowa’s interests remain high on the agenda in
Washington, D.C.”
