Courageous Conversation

Mark your calendars and join us on Thursday June 7th from 12:30 – 2:30 at the McKinley Middle School Auditorium, 620 10th Street SE in Cedar Rapids  for Cookies and Courageous Conversation with Dr. Eddie Moore Jr.

Impact & Book-Signing Event: The Guide For White Women Who Teach Black Boys

Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., the lead editor, delivers an impact exercise and facilitates a panel discussion with contributors about The Guide for White Women who Teach Black Boys

Purpose:

The majority of public elementary and secondary school teachers in the U.S., Canada, and England are White women while the student of color populations in those three nations are increasing. Indeed, the student of color population is predicted to soon outnumber White students in the U.S. The research suggests that many teachers are unprepared, unskilled and in many ways unfamiliar with the cultural, social emotional needs of Black boys.

The Guide for White Women who Teach Black Boys was designed to be a lasting resource and guide (google) for all readers. It’s not just for K-12 educators. There was a conscious effort to create this book absent of the deficit model and to focus on what White Women teachers (and Black Boys) can do rather than what they are not doing. The chapters were written from multiple perspectives by a diverse group of people. The book wants to challenge readers to recognize and address the real issues that must be addressed head on no matter how difficult they are. Each chapter includes an exercise that can be completed by one teacher, or groups, or can be implemented program-wide.

The Book Talk features the lead editor of the book, Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr. It takes the whole community to support our work to ensure all children become positive and productive members of our future.  We hope you can join us for all or part of the conversation. Please feel free to bring anyone who may have an interest in engaging in courageous and positive conversation around culture and climate in our community. Check him out at https://www.eddiemoorejr.com/

Pyramid Theatre Company Presents Prowess

Prowess opens at the Stoner Theatre in less than a month and it is one of the most important and powerful stories Pyramid has ever told to date. This is the most physically exhausting play for actors we've ever done. It is action packed with thrilling fight sequences and dancing. The only thing that makes it more thrilling is an audience. We are getting excitingly close to selling out our opening weekend with less than a month to go. We've never had this many tickets pre-sold before. Purchase tickets to our June 8th, 9th, and 10th performances today to help us reach a new milestone in Pyramid's history and watch the action packed trailer below!

Thank You,

Ken-Matt Martin

Iowa Secretary of State

sos

The League of Women Voters of Iowa has prepared an informational card to educate their organization members on voting in this year’s elections. With their permission, the Secretary of State’s Office is very proud to share this incredible tool with other organizations across Iowa so we can make sure all Iowans are #VoterReady for June 5th.

If you have produced an educational piece to help Iowans become Voter Ready, please send it to me. We might be able to add it to the Voter Ready Toolkit so other organizations can use it as well.

If you have other ideas, please reach out to me as well.
