Gateway Dance Theatre

EMBRACE, Gateway Dance Theatre’s new and unique creative project combines dance, world music, the spoken word and shadow puppets to tell the story of a village people and their protection of trees from an invading army. It is a heroic story from India and serves as the cornerstone of the Chipko (embrace) movement that energized many environmental movements throughout India and beyond.

Embrace will further awareness of climate change, the green effect, and how it connects to humanity, as so aptly stated by Chief Seattle, a deeply grounded environmentalist and Native American,: “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread with it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”

Enjoy a unique experience of drama, dance, and music for all ages!

Evelyn K. Davis Center  - Summer Youth Program

It is with great pleasure that I send this recruitment e mail for the We Are Strong African American Families (SAAF) program. This program is for youth from 6th-9th grade and their caregivers.  It assists families in better understanding youth and youth better understanding their caregivers.  The program strengthens communication, understanding of goals and family values, reducing risky behaviors (drug/alcohol use and sex) and fun in general.

If you have any families that you feel would benefit from this program (essentially anyone with a middle schooler) and are African American, or mixed race families, please refer them over to the information on the flyer to register on our Facebook page or send me their information and I am happy to contact them. The program will run on Thursdays from 5:30-8:00 May 17-June 28. The program offers FREE childcare, dinner each night, and tickets to a family event (Iowa State Fair tickets last year) and FUN!

Richard & Linda Harrell Scholarship

The Richard & Linda Harrell Foster Care Scholarship was developed in order to encourage and support African American High School graduates to strive for higher education. Richard and Linda were long time foster parents who believe in education for personal betterment and becoming a productive member of society but also understand the difficulties and obstacles surmounting African American teens in pursing higher education. Thus it is their desire to make a difference.

If you know of an African American high school senior who has been involved in foster care at any point of their lives, please encourage them to apply. If there are any questions regarding the scholarship or the application contact LaTonya Calderon at 515.778.6551 or pastorlatonya@hotmail.com

Thank you for your time and consideration in helping to spread this wonderful opportunity.

IOWA HISTORY PROJECT

Officials with the State Historical Society of Iowa, with support from a federal grant, announced they will launch a multiyear research project this spring about the African-American Civil Rights Movement in Iowa during the 20th century. The $50,000 grant comes from the Department of the Interior and National Park Service, which recently announced $12.6 million in funding for 51 projects in 24 states that preserve sites and highlight stories related to the African-American struggle for equality. In Iowa, the “Iowa African-American Civil Rights Survey” will identify properties and people still unrecognized for the roles they played in civil rights history, as well as National Register of Historic Places with undocumented connections to the civil rights movement. Researchers will focus on places of work and worship, neighborhoods, educational institutions and public places as well as people, organizations and institutions involved in the movement. The two-and-a-half-year project will culminate with a survey report, at least one nomination of a historic property to the National Register of Historic Places and a customized civil rights tour on the Iowa Culture smartphone app. Currently, the State Historic Preservation Office’s database holds 11 National Register-nominated properties associated with African-American history, and only four of those are recognized for civil rights in Iowa
