Nominations are being accepted for the 2018 Iowa Latino Hall of Fame


Iowa Latino Hall of Fame

Many outstanding Latinos/as helped shape Iowa and many strong Latino leaders continue to contribute their talents and skills to improve the quality of life in this state. To recognize and honor these achievers and to provide visible examples for tomorrow’s Latino leaders, the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs has established the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame in 2017 with the goal of ensuring that the efforts of Latino leaders is honorably recognized and celebrated.


To nominate an outstanding Iowa Latino/a, a Latinx Youth, and/or a non-Latino for the Latino Ambassador for Equity and Justice Award please fill out the form below no later than July 1, 2018

Nomination Criteria

Latinos/as inducted into the Hall of Fame have made a major impact on the lives of others and helped to elevate the status of Latinos in our state, our nation, and, in some cases, around the world. 

Latinx Youth 

The Latinx Youth Leadership Award is awarded to an Iowa Latinx youth that is making a difference in their community. 

Latino Ambassador 

The Iowa Latino Ambassador Award for Equity and Justice recognizes and honors the efforts and accomplishments of non-Latino and/or Latino Iowans. The award is awarded to persons whose work is deemed outstanding and a significant contribution to the equity and justice for Iowa’s new immigrant population.

SELECTIONS PROCESS

Each year, the commission approves the selection of by a committee composed of three commissioners and two public citizens. The selection committee reviews and selects the nominees, the commission then reviews and votes to approve the suggested nominees to be inducted into the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame.

Iowa Legal Aid

Iowa Legal Aid

Iowa Legal Aid provides free legal help with civil law problems for eligible low-income Iowans. Iowa Legal Aid’s Farmworker Project can serve any migrant, seasonal, or year-round agricultural worker with any type of civil legal issue. For example, we can help with:

  • Employment issues, such as not being paid wages owed.
  • Housing issues, such as evictions, Section 8 terminations, or health and safety concerns with
  • housing.
  • Public benefits/food assistance
  • Family law
  • Taxes

Alejandro Pino

Alejandro Pino from Cedar Rapids served in the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs for two terms (eight years).

Among many initiatives, Alejandro was a founding member of the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame, a key player in the first ever Iowa Latino Day on the Hill and donor for commission initiatives. 

We thank Alejandro for his service!
