Department of Transportation Message for Iowa's Hondurans with TPS

IOWA IDENTIFICATION CARD OR DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL FOR IOWANS FROM HONDURAS PRESENTING TPS DOCUMENTS

The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) is aware there was a delay in the United States Citizenship and Immigrant Services (USCIS) releasing the Federal Register Notice for individuals from Honduras to be able to initiate their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) extension renewal.  We are also aware the current extension for designation of Honduras for TPS expires January 5, 2018.  The notice to initiate renewal was not released by USCIS until December 15, 2017 and we realize this may not allow sufficient time for TPS extension renewal prior to January 5, 2018.  The following information provides guidance for customers when visiting one of our issuance service centers requesting renewal of an Iowa issued credential.

VISITING A DRIVER & IDENTIFICATION SERVICES CENTER FOR RENEWAL

We recognize the delay in filing for your TPS extension or awaiting an appointment with an immigration attorney to file for TPS extension can be difficult, time-consuming, and stressful.  We are here to help regarding the process for renewing your Iowa identification card or driver’s license, and hope the following information simplifies the process when you visit us. When visiting one of our driver & identification service centers to renew your Iowa identification card or driver’s license, we request you bring the following documentation:

1. Your renewal TPS extension paperwork or authorization card, if available

OR

2. Your existing work authorization card (January 5, 2018 expiry) and previous extension application

With this information, we are required to verify lawful status with USCIS by creating a SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) case.  For individuals who have started their TPS extension process, we may receive a favorable response from USCIS which allows us to issue a renewal.  For others who are awaiting to file or pending, we may be able to issue a 60-day extension of your Iowa credential to allow time to complete the TPS extension renewal.  As each customer situation is unique and SAVE responses are not always received immediately, our staff will work directly with you providing information about what options are available as well as answering your questions.

Information on our locations can be found here.  In addition to visiting us, we welcome your questions or concerns and can be reached by phone at 515-244-8725, by e-mail (ODS@iowadot.us), or by live chat found on our website here.
