Iowa LIHEAP Now Accepting Applications
The Division of Community Action Agencies announced that the Low-Income
Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is taking applications to assist
low-income and vulnerable households with a portion of their winter heating
costs. This program is critical to helping vulnerable Iowans stay safe and
warm during the winter season. LIHEAP applications are accepted on a
first-come first-served basis between October 1, 2017 - April 30,
2018. The applications are processed through a network of 17 local
community action agencies that serve all 99 Iowa counties. Eligibility is
based upon household income and size, and is targeted to households with
elderly, disabled, and young children.
The LIHEAP program is expected to serve approximately
80,000 households this winter, with an average one-time benefit of about $450,
which generally will appear as a credit on the household's utility
bill. Households that are certified eligible for LIHEAP also automatically
qualify for Iowa's moratorium on disconnection, which runs from November 1,
2017 through April 1, 2018.
