Division of Community Colleges & Workforce Preparation

Welcome back!

I am hopeful you had a refreshing break from school. There are so many great activities going on in our schools and across the state. New partnerships springing up between business and education. It is a very exciting time to be in education.

The Business Education Update will be your connection to what’s happening in Des Moines and across the state. Please keep me informed of information that would be good to share with other educators.

And as always, contact me if you have any questions!

Financial Literacy – still an option for Business teachers

I’ve received a number of calls and emails regarding the new Social Studies standards & benchmarks (which include the 21st century skills – financial literacy). To be clear, nothing has changed. 21st Century skills can and should be covered by everyone in their curriculum. So financial literacy competencies could appear in business education, family consumer science, math or social studies.

What else that has not changed is that the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners crosswalks teacher licensure with SCED Codes (course codes).  They are still identified as follows:

  • SCED Code – 02157 Consumer Math      5-12 Business-General; 5-12 Mathematics
  • SCED Code – 04201 Econ      5-12 Economics; 5-12 All Social Sciences; 5-12 Business-All
  • SCED Code – 12101 Banking & Finance      5-12 Business-General; 5-12 Business-All
  • SCED Code – 12103 Finance      5-12 Business-General; 5-12 Business-All
  • SCED Code – 19262 Consumer Economics/Personal Finance     5-12 Business-General; 5-12 Family & Consumer Sciences-General; 5-12 Business-All
  • SCED Code – 22210 Consumer Economics/Personal Finance     5-12 Business-General; 5-12 Business-Marketing/Management; 5-12 Family & Consumer Sciences-General; 5-12 Consumer/Homemaking Education; 5-12 Business-All

Certifications for Business

Industry certifications bring value to our CTE programs and the opportunity for our students to graduate with more than a diploma. There will be a pre-conference session (free) for educators to take one of four certification exams (Fundamental Business Concepts, Fundamental marketing Concepts, Concepts of Finance or Entrepreneurship/Management). This will enable you to become familiar with these certifications so you can decide if this would be a good opportunity for your students. For more information about ASK exams, go to www.askinstitute.org.

For a list of Iowa teachers who have successfully passed an ASK exam: http://www.ibeaonline.org/documents/ASKCertificationListthruOctober2016.pdf.

The testing session will run 12 noon – 2 pm on Sunday, October 22. Allow 100 minutes per exam. Pre-registration is required - https://goo.gl/forms/AwaA3jXDdUQCtnWm2

Proof Critical to Building Strong Business Programs

Given the various Perkins requirements (different among states) and local interest in STEM and other initiatives, it’s more important than ever for local programs to document student learning gains – proof of learning. Our not-for-profit research partner has developed a new micro-credential series (digital badges) to encourage student testing performance. Coupled with third-party online pre- and post-testing offered by our partner MBA Research, NOCTI, and others, local schools can easily collect data to document student progress. Simply comparing pre-test scores (for exams taken this month) with end-of-the year exam scores can go a long way in documenting student achievement using hard quantitative data. And, if you take the time to connect students with the digital badges (no additional costs), both the individual student and the program have further documentation of student achievement.

Using third-party assessments for proof-of-learning data is easy, inexpensive, and takes very little additional time. The resulting data can support your program in many different ways, including:
• Improved testing scores with BPA, DECA, and FBLA events
• Adjustments to curricula based on objective data
• Positive positioning with local and state decision-makers
