graduate image CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2017 & RETIREES and THANK YOU!

Message from Lisa

As another school year closes, I wanted to take a moment to THANK YOU all for the amazing work you do with our Family & Consumer Sciences students all year!  Schools, classrooms, communities, and students all across Iowa are better off today because of the time and effort you make to get to know your students and communities with your programming.  If you are changing districts, be sure to let me know where you are going (and an email) along with who your replacement is.  That will help me update my list of FCS educators in the state and get them networking with the rest of the field.

I would like to not only congratulate your students on their graduations, but also those in higher education that have completed degrees, be it an undergraduate, master's, or doctoral degree.  You have done yourself a great service by furthering your knowledge and skills and should be proud of the work that you have put forward in achieving this milestone!

I also want to give a special thank you to those of you who are retiring.  I wish you all the best in however you plan to spend your "time off."  We count on you to help us keep our profession meaningful and relevant by helping market our connections not only to high need careers and employability skills, but also as a vehicle to ensure a strong work-life balance that enables success for all. Please give your replacement my email and I will be sure to connect them with this monthly newsletter and other items of importance to FCS and CTE educators acrosss the state.

Conference and June program work

I hope to see you all in Ames for our state FCS conference in a few short weeks!  Kristie Kuhse, our conference coordinator has an excellent lineup of sessions for everyone. The first day will be a busy one that will help us see how to focus our work toward the Human Services Cluster and a career focus in both Middle and High School offerings.

I want to thank those of you who volunteered to meet in Des Moines later in June as a follow up to that first day conference work.  I was overwhelmed by the responses!  Since the dollars are limited for only 10 people for this first round this fiscal year, a department of education group is reviewing the responses to ensure there is equitable distribution of membership from various AEAs, school sizes, and years of experience. I will be contacting those of you who completed the survey monkey in the next week to let you know the committee membership once the process is completed.

Katie Brouwer Home Baking Association winner   Students sampling muffins picture

The Home Baking Association has selected Roland-Story High School Family & Consumer Sciences teacher Katie Brouwer to receive the 2017 Educator Award for her lesson, "The Muffin Man and the Healthy Kids Act."

This lesson was developed as a "problem-based learning scenario" in which students were given many choices and options in producing a solution to a problem.  The problem in this scenario was to create a muffin recipe that met the regulations of the Healthy Kids Act--and one that was appealing to high school students. Students researched substitutions; analyzed nutritional content; and evaluated taste, texture, and appearance. Groups submitted their ingredient requests and began the process of production, evaluation, and research. 9 - 12 students who were not in the Foods & Nutrition class served as taste testers and provided feedback on the appearance, taste, and texture of each muffin which was then given to the student bakers.  Following the final production day, students also calcuated the cost of making their muffin recipe and submitted a written reflection about the recipe development process.

As part of this honor, Mrs. Brouwer will recieve $1000 and a trip for two to the Home Baking Association annual meeting in New Orleans next fall to present her winning entry to association membership.

What great things are happening in your neck of the woods in FCS and with FCS educators?  Let me know and we will get you recognized in future newsletters!

Why I Teach - Iowa State University School of Education Video

For the last few years, Iowa State University has held a teacher education "cording" ceremony for those who are obtaining their Iowa teacher initial licensure.  This has been a very special time to recognize those who are entering America's greatest profession.  This year, their opening video highlighted one of our own Family & Consumer Sciences Education and Studies licensure students, Amelia Williams. Consider using the video found at this link in recruiting your students for this amazing career journey.

...and if you missed it, here is the link to a great article the College did on our major on national Family & Consumer Sciences Education Day!  (Another great marketing item for you!)
