April/May Business Education Update - Message from Kelli

Where did April go?

Time flies and so did the month of April--at least for me. Spring always brings a flurry of reporting deadlines and questions about programs for next year. This year has brought even more questions with the passage of the CTE Redesign bill (HF2392). Included in Division II of this bill was the realignment of service areas. Remember that combining the service areas of Business and Marketing did not change any licensure requirements. If you have any questions, contact Dave Wempen at Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.

End of the Year Changes!

Please let me know if you are retiring or changing schools for next year.  If you are leaving, please send me the new teacher's name and contact information.  Thank you!   kelli.diemer@iowa.gov

Sorry for this extremely late notice but I just learned of this event and wanted to share it with you -

Accelerate DSM

The second annual Accelerate DSM will be held on Wednesday, May 17, at the Iowa Events Center.  This conference is a day long event to make connections and gain key takeaways for entrepreneurs and business startups.  This may be a great opportunity for business teachers to learn more about teaching entrepreneurship and making business connections.  To learn more, go here.

Approving All CTE Programs

Starting next year, all career and technical education programs will be approved (first by the Secondary CTE regional planning partnerships and then by the Iowa Dept. of Education). This will occur through a rotation of all programs in the state over five years. To prepare for this process, it is recommended that you review the attached document “Start Here—Self Study for Program Approval.”

First steps -

(1) All CTE programs are listed under CIP codes. You can find the assigned CIP Code for your program in the Secondary CTE Reporting Application.

Most Business programs are identified as a Business/Commerce, General program (CIP Code 520101).

A program that focuses on the general study of business, including the processes of interchanging goods and services (buying, selling and producing), business organization, and accounting as used in profit-making and nonprofit public and private institutions and agencies. The programs may prepare individuals to apply business principles and techniques in various occupational settings.

Most Marketing programs are identified as a Marketing/Marketing Management, General program (CIP Code 521401).

A program that generally prepares individuals to undertake and manage the process of developing consumer audiences and moving products from producers to consumers. Includes instruction in buyer behavior and dynamics, principle of marketing research, demand analysis, cost-volume and profit relationships, pricing theory, marketing campaign and strategic planning, market segments, advertising methods, sales operations and management, consumer relations, retailing, and applications to specific products and markets.

(2) If your program is not 520101 Business/Commerce, General or 521401 Marketing/Marketing Management, General, go to the National Center for Education Statistics (Classification of Instruction Programs) to locate the description of your CIP Code.

Featured High School Business Program – Ames High School

The Ames High Business Engagement Collaborative is a program that connects students to businesses through project-based learning. The students work from the ISU Research Park, completing authentic projects for businesses around the community. These projects range in focus, ensuring they meet an interest area of at least one of the students. The purpose is to not only provide students with authentic learning experiences, but to help them narrow down, or perhaps open up interest areas as they prepare to go forward after high school, and overall develop and enhance their soft skills which employers are looking for in new hires. Students have found success in these areas, and have also received internship and job opportunities based on the work they have done on their projects. For more information on the Ames High Business Engagement Collaborative, contact Vicki Hales, vicki.hales@ames.k12.ia.us.
