January Business Education Update - Message from Kelli

Welcome to 2017 and your second semester--which means your year is half over!  The Legislative Session has started and several state reports have been filed including the CTE Redesign and Implementation Report.  I will continue to work with the Business and Marketing programs, and Pat Thieben will take on the new service area called Information Solutions (Arts, Communications and Information Systems).  Here is the link to Iowa's new realigned service areas.

If you are teaching computer science courses, please read the attached memo from Pat.

Post Secondary Readiness Reports

The purpose of the Post Secondary Readiness Report is to support state and local efforts to meet the goal that all Iowa students are prepared for success beyond high school.  This includes information on enrollment in colleges and university, remedial course-taking rates, and post secondary retention and complete rates for students who graduated from public high schools in Iowa.

CTE Policy Watch

For those of you who are interested in federal legislation that impacts career and technical education, go to the CTE Policy Watch.  It is free and gives you current posts on happenings.

LAP HIGHLIGHT!

Cultural Intelligence is Crucial to Success

LAP-EC-105: What's Shakin'? (Factors Affecting the Business Environment)
As quick as a "click," you can send a private message or broadcast one across the world. The speed of communication has increased exponentially, allowing businesses to focus on international business opportunities and competition never seen before. In this global marketplace, business leaders must understand other cultures' values, customs, and traditions in order to communicate effectively. Without this cultural intelligence, it is difficult to negotiate potential business deals as well as to meet cultural differences, needs, and wants within a foreign market. The "Cultural Diversity" video by Speak First explains the importance of respecting differences among cultures in order to communicate effectively: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDvLk7e2Irc&list=PL-BnrTdQ15sazEhL3Nw9uOzWYXlbg6F1b&index=3
