December 2016 Business Education Update

Division of Community Colleges & Workforce Preparation

Message from Kelli

It was too good to be true—the weather, I mean. Iowa winter is now knocking (banging) at our door. Personally, I like snow (in moderation). Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this will be a mild winter.

ACTE VISION Conference

ACTE Board
2016-17 ACTE Board above (Kelli Diemer third from right)

About fifty Iowa educators returned last week from the annual ACTE VISION Conference in Las Vegas. This event was attended by a record 4,500 participants from all areas of career and technical education (Business, FCS, Ag, etc.). There were tremendous keynote speakers, breakout sessions, tours, meetings, workshops, and networking.  Next year, ACTE VISION will be held in Nashville, TN. For more information: VISION 2017

As of July, I am serving as the ACTE Business Education Division Vice President.  This is a three year term which will end June 2019. In this role, I am looking for Business educators who want to get involved by reviewing student award applications or VISION conference breakout sessions for Business education (both online) or serving on the Business Education Division Policy Committee (attendance to conference is required). If you are interested in being considered for one of these opportunities or to find out more information, please fill out this online form.

SUPER Business Educators!

Iowa will be well represented at the MBA Leadership Forum that will be held January 27 - 30 in Orlando, FL.  Iowa Business Education Association President Kyle VanAusdall (Central Lee HS) and President-Elect Andrew Thonstad (Akron-Westfield CSD) will be participating in this forum along with Rachel Nelson Loupee (Marshalltown High School).  Rachel is also participating in a pilot program to teach ethics and will continue her training just prior to the Leadership forum.  Iowa certainly has Super Business Educators!

CTE Redesign – Impact on Business Education?

The secondary CTE Redesign, which focuses on middle and high school students, is in line with the Future Ready Iowa initiative by building Iowa's talent pipeline and closing the skills gap so that more Iowans have quality career opportunities and employers have the skilled workforce they need.

The CTE redesign will:

  • Improve access to high-quality CTE through a statewide system of regional planning partnerships to assist school districts in providing an effective, efficient, and economical means of delivering programs.
  • Encourage alignment of secondary CTE offerings to in-demand occupations to meet the needs of employers.
  • Reform career and academic planning and CTE programming to encourage students to explore opportunities aligned to their interests through holistic career guidance, exploratory CTE coursework, and work-based learning opportunities.

Go to High-Quality CTE Framework which is ACTE's draft version of a definition of high quality CTE for more information.

Iowa's realigned service areas:

  1. Business, Finance, Marketing and Management
  2. Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources
  3. Arts, Communications, and Information Systems
  4. Applied Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Manufacturing
  5. Health Sciences
  6. Human Services
