November FCS/Human Services Update

Division of Community Colleges & Workforce Preparation

                                          Thanksgiving

Message from Lisa

What amazing fall weather we have had!  I have enjoyed the beauty of the fall colors as I have traveled across the state visiting FCS educators and CTE consortia.  I have been fortunate to travel to Kansas to attend an FCS Innovation Conference and have also attended the Iowa ACTE fall Best Practices Conference and spend a day at the Non-traditional conference this past week.  It is exciting that there are so many connections that our programs have in common with initiatives at both the state and national level!

The work with the CTE Redesign legislation has just begun.  Under the new law, all CTE programs must be approved, and in the distant future Regional Planning Partnerships will begin their first round of reviews and recommendations.  Be sure to tap into the conversations to know how you can be prepared with strong FCS programming and coursework as part of your district CTE plan.  If you need assistance or would like to set up a time to find out how you can connect to the Human Services initiatives for your comprehensive programs, please don't hesitate to contact me!

In closing, please be sure to check below for several great opportunities for professional development and advocacy.  I wish you all a very restful Thanksgiving!

“Nutrition Nuggets” for the FCS Classroom – An Opportunity for Teacher License Renewal Credit

From Ruth Litchfield, Iowa State University FSHN Extension:

Iowa State Extension will be offering a hybrid (online and local workshop) teacher license renewal credit (1 credit) for Family and Consumer Sciences teachers in January and February 2017.  FCS teachers will receive training on 8 lessons of topic-based curriculum. The curriculum, based on the scientific literature foundation of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, serves to introduce FCS classrooms to hot topics in nutrition as well as career opportunities in Food Science and Human Nutrition. Participants will become acquainted with the latest research in the field as well as able to employ various nutrition education tools, strategies and resources.

Participants will complete approximately 8 hours of online instruction and attend 8 hours of local workshop for ‘in-class’ time. The local workshop will demonstrate the experiential (lab) activities associated with the curriculum (see AEA PD online for workshop dates/locations).  Experiential activities include food preparation, using online resources (Nutrient Data Laboratory and SuperTracker), reading and interpreting food labels, and creating a nutrition education message. Participants also need to complete approximately 30 hours of ‘out-of-class’ time activities and assignments for the teacher license renewal credit.

Each lesson is designed to fit both traditional and block schedules styles – two 50-minute periods or one 90-minute block. The lesson topics include: protein and supplement use, sugar-sweetened and caffeinated beverages, food safety (at home and in industry) and career opportunities in FSHN. This curriculum will provide the students with in-depth, evidence-based nutrition education as well as hands-on experiential learning.

Nutrition Nuggets supports the following Iowa Core Health Literacy Standards:

  • Explain the impact of personal health behaviors on the functioning of body systems.
  • Explain how personal choices impact health maintenance and disease prevention.
  • Understand preventive physical and mental health measures, including proper diet, nutrition, exercise, risk avoidance and stress reduction.
  • Employ the effective communication methods to accurately express health information and ideas.
  • Evaluate healthy and unhealthy alternatives in decision-making.
  • Determine reliability, accuracy, dependability of health information sources.
  • Identify factors that influence healthy eating.
  • Establish healthy eating behaviors.

Please see the attached brochure for more information, costs, and how to get registered.  Don't miss out on this excellent professional development opportunity!

Advocacy and Making the Connections

Don't miss out on your chance to advocate for FCS and CTE!  We are still in need of students to attend CTE Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, January 31st.  We have shifts to showcase and demonstrate the skills your program develops all day from 9 - 2 and you can get in a visit to your legislators for a chance to practice your elevator speeches as well!  This is an EXCELLENT way to share the value of FCS in Iowa to the people that help make programming and financial decisions!  Please consider participating in this event.  If you are able to attend, contact your IFCSE representatives Kelsie Engelken, Courtney Teghtmeyer, or Iowa ACTE Executive Director Sandy Miller TODAY!

Thanks to students from SE Polk Middle School and  Southeast Valley High School and instructors Ali Thompson and Sherry Vogel for sharing their FCS/CTE stories at the Iowa Association of School Boards conference this month at the Iowa Association for Career and Technical Education (Iowa ACTE) Booth.

More Connections you can make:

Do you have guest speakers from business and industry visit your classes?  Have you scheduled tours of area employers? Do you make job shadows available to your students?  How are YOU making the connection to business/industry?  Are you in need of ideas?   Connect with your regional Intermediary contact here.

Don't Forget About Your Signature Line!

As you think about your program contributions as a part of CTE, a suggestion to help market our programs as a part of successful CTE programming would be to sign your emails with Career and Technical Educator as well as Family & Consumer Sciences as your specialty area. This helps unify our programming as part of Perkins funding and a part of the significant content that we provide to all students across the state and nation.

Rules for CTE Redesign

Chapter 46 rules, which implement the provisions of House File 2392 (CTE Redesign) were presented to the State Board of Education in November.  Comprehensive guidance on the rules are currently being prepared and there are numerous resources regarding implementation on the Department's website.  The Department is committed to an open and inclusive rules process: therefore, public input on the rules is still being solicited here.  Contact Pradeep Kotamraju with any comments or questions.

KUDOS to Kristie Kuhse, finalist for 2017 Iowa Teacher of the Year!

Kristie Kuhse with Governor Branstad and Director Wise

The Iowa Teacher of the Year Award was established in 1958 and is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Education through an appropriation from the Iowa legislature. The award provides an opportunity to recognize an Iowa teacher who motivates, challenges, and inspires excellence; who is respected by students and peers; who is a dedicated professional that helps nurture hidden talents and abilities; who is a creative, caring individual; who takes teaching beyond textbooks and blackboards; and who is an exceptional teacher helping to redefine American education.

Congratulations to our own Kristie Kuhse, FCS educator at Waverly Shellrock Middle School for being named a finalist for this prestigious recognition!  Check out additional photos of the celebration here.

Don't forget FCCLA

FCCLA Logo

Don't forget that Career and Technical Student Organizations are an important piece in developing a strong FCS program. Do you aim to instill students with a love of learning? Advising an FCCLA chapter can be an excellent adventure with rich rewards, a stronger FACS program, closer relationships with students, and personal and professional recognition. Keep your eye on the prize, relax, and rely on your students creativity and enthusiasm!

You don't have to do it all!  FCCLA offers a variety of national programs and events to help increase the effectiveness of your Family and Consumer Sciences program and motivates students. During your chapter's first years, guide members toward the programs that seem to best serve your local community needs. As members gain experience and build a tradition of chapter success, they will be ready to branch out into additional programs and events.  Want more information? Check out this "Why FCCLA" brief!

Timothy Marx picture

From Timothy Marx, Iowa FCCLA State Executive Director:

Greetings! The State Executive Council has been doing a great job with the support of their advisers this year leading Iowa FCCLA through this transition period by working diligently to achieve the goals they have established in their Program of Work. Meanwhile, the state staff have been working as well to improve the quality of programming and services for our advisers, as well as our members.

If you're struggling with lesson plans and how to help connect your lessons to real-world applications or by getting your students involved in the community, then FCCLA might be your next step. FCCLA offers eight (8) national programs, 29 STAR Events and ten (10) Skill Demonstration Events. The easy part about any of these is that you're already teaching the foundation information members needs for these events in your curriculum! These programs and events would simply reinforce to administration the validity of an FCS program because members have the opportunity to compete using the career-readiness skills you're teaching and be recognized for the efforts they are making in their communities - and the best thing is, the rubrics are already designed for you. For example, if you are teaching any sort of financial literacy in your classes, members can use the program Financial Fitness to develop a project that educates others about money OR they can compete in events such as Entrepreneurship, Interior Design, Life Event Planning or Food Innovations - all of which require the use of budgeting skills. All of these aforementioned components are linked to national FCS standards as well as cross-walked with core standards. In addition Iowa offers a Peer Education program for members who would like to be involved but without the pressures of competition.

In January we will be sponsoring Day At the Capitol that provides members the opportunity to learn about the legislative process as well as network with their local representatives and senators to share their FCS/FCCLA stories. Also, there is an opportunity for you to share your FCS/FCCLA program in the rotunda at a table sponsored by Iowa ACTE.

In March we will be wrapping up another successful year at our State Leadership Conference. This year advisers will have their own adviser sessions to select from while members have their own. We have recently partnered with the Midwest Dairy Council to work on some pilot activities for the 2017-2018 year which will be shared.

In closing, I hope that your year is going well for you and if you are a FCCLA adviser, THANK YOU for all that you have done for our members. And if you are not an adviser, I'd like to invite you to check us out at either of these upcoming events. For more information you can check us our on our website, www.iowafccla.org or contact myself at timothy.marx@iafccla.org.
