Message from Kelli

Great fall weather and great professional development opportunities—I hope you are taking full advantage of both! The IBEA Convention was a perfect opportunity to network with other Business educators. If you missed this year—don’t miss it next year. Professional development is too important. Continue to enjoy our great weather for as long as it is with us.  Kelli.diemer@iowa.gov

The Iowa Business Education Association held their annual conference on October 23-24, 2016 in Urbandale at the Holiday Inn & Suites. Over 100 business educators from secondary and post-secondary attended the conference. The keynote speaker this year was Gaye Hanson who spoke on igniting our life both personally and professionally. We also had two featured speakers this year: Stacey Behmer who brought her expertise on Google and Barb Brown, who shared information on leadership both in a pre-conference training and in one of the breakout sessions. ASK certification tests were available free for conference attendees to take as a pre-conference option as well. Participants had the opportunity to attend over 45 breakout sessions over the two days, as well as visit with vendors. New president Kyle Van Ausdall (kvanausdall@centralee.org) assumed his duties for the 2016-2017 school year.

Have you heard of Project Lead the Way? ProStart? CASE for Ag? Here’s Business’s Answer – MBA High School of Business

Our nonprofit partner, MBAResearch & Curriculum Center, has developed a project-based business administration program for college-bound students. High School of Business is in its 10th year and making positive strides nationally on behalf of students. Here’s some information to help you determine if it might be right for your school. We currently have three programs in Iowa: Waverly-Shellrock HS, Saydel HS, and Boone HS.

1) The numbers make the case for business administration education for college-bound students. (Details and citations are here.)

o More college-bound students in your high school will work toward a degree in business administration than any other major.
o Students graduate confident HSB has prepared them for college and career.
o Participating schools tell us the program has helped improve relations with local business, local post-secondary, and parents.

2) Take a 30-minute tour of the program via this webinar.

3) Website has the details.
