September Business Education Update

Division of Community Colleges & Workforce Preparation

Welcome Back To School
I hope your year has gotten off to a great start. Prior to my 9 years at the Iowa Department of Education, I taught for 20 years at Cedar Falls High School and Hawkeye Community College. Every August, I still remember how starting a new year felt. I also remember the work it took to be a high school/middle school teacher. Thank you for your work with Iowa’s Business Education students.

This year, you will be receiving monthly updates about Iowa Business and Marketing education and career and technical education. Please take a moment to be informed about what’s happening and as always, let me know how I can help you.

Also new this year, I have been elected to the ACTE (Association for Career & Technical Education) Board as the Business Education Division Vice President. In this role, I will be providing a lot of information about policies on federal CTE funding, Perkins, and other legislative information. Please stay informed as this has great impact on what you do. Go to the ACTE Business Education Division website for more information.

Secondary CTE Redesign

For more information about the IBEA Convention, see the website.

MBA Research Conclave -- Mobile, Alabama (October 7-10)
For many business and marketing teachers, Conclave has become the single most important conference they attend. Conclave is designed to help anyone who teaches or administers the teaching of business administration (entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality, management/administration, and marketing) build better, bigger, stronger programs at the local level. Every session is designed for take-home value. For more information, go to the Conclave website.

Intermediary Work-Based Learning Network
To increase work-based learning opportunities for students, a statewide Intermediary Network was established across Iowa. Regional Intermediary contacts are located in each community college region and can help educators connect with business and industry. These connections could be internships, job shadowing, tours, speakers, etc. Contact your regional contact here and find out how they can assist you in building connections between education and business/industry.
