In the January 2026 report to the Board of Education, Superintendent Keith Hayashi opened with an update on the Department’s supplemental operating budget request for fiscal year 2026-27.
Superintendent Hayashi reported that the fiscal landscape is uncertain heading into the 2026 legislative session due to changes at the federal level. However, there was some optimism in the state's Council on Revenues projection that certain industries are performing stronger than expected. He outlined the Department's request for an additional $25.8 million for projects spanning student supports, school meals, health and safety, critical infrastructure and federal funds replacement.
Superintendent Hayashi closed by recognizing recent student and staff achievements:
- Kerry Wasano, band director at Maui High, was recognized at a ceremony in Chicago with the prestigious Bandworld Legion of Honor award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation, recognizing the nation’s top high school band directors.
- Principal Frank Fernandes retired after 50 years with Hawaiʻi public schools. He led his alma mater for 39 years — a HIDOE record.
- Deputy Superintendent Tammi Oyadomari-Chun was named a “Women Who Mean Business” awardee by Pacific Business News. Deputy Oyadomari-Chun has been instrumental in planning and implementing the strategic initiatives of the Department.
