 In the May 2025 report to the Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Keith Hayashi provided updates regarding student transportation, a recap of the 2025 legislative session, and recent awards and recognitions.
Superintendent Hayashi shared that the Department is working on student transportation plans for next school year to try to avoid last-minute disruptions.
He also recapped the legislative session and key bills, including the state budget, which awaits Gov. Josh Green’s action. The budget bill includes over $190 million in general fund support for FY 2025-26 operations in critical areas including summer learning, student meals, nursing services, school security, workforce development, and utilities.
For capital improvements, Superintendent Hayashi said the Department was allocated lump sum funds for key categories like health and safety and project completion, along with recurring funding to tackle the deferred maintenance backlog.
For awards and recognitions, Superintendent Hayashi recognized winners of the Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award and Hawai‘i Teacher of Promise award. He also recognized:
- 21 HIDOE schools that received national recognition for its student councils;
- A Kapa‘a High School senior who made history, graduating with her bachelor’s degree from Chaminade University along with her high school diploma;
- Three public school finalists in the Localicious recipe contest who created healthy dishes they want to see on their school menus using local ingredients; and
- Campbell High School being crowned girls flag football state champions in the sport's inaugural season as a sanctioned sport.
