In the April 2025 report to the Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Keith Hayashi provided updates regarding student transportation and the Department's ongoing efforts to monitor and evaluate the risks and impacts of new federal actions to funding and operations.
Potential budgetary and programmatic impacts regarding the President’s March 20 Executive Order to close the U.S. Department of Education were shared, and Superintendent Hayashi went over the Department’s federal funding and fiscal outlook, in addition to law enforcement guidance that was issued to schools.
For awards and recognitions, Superintendent Hayashi recognized the 2025 Mathletes of Washington Middle School, returning champions of the state MATHCOUNTS competition, as well as Kealakehe High School students, who were named the Hawaiʻi winner of the 15th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow national STEM competition. The Department’s 2024 Employee, Manager and Team of the Year as well as this year’s National Distinguished Principal, National Outstanding Assistant Principal, and Hawaiʻi Association of Secondary School Administrators’ High School and Middle School Principals of the Year were also celebrated.
Superintendent Hayashi also recapped legislation the Department is monitoring this session, including the state budget bill and regulating cell phones in classrooms.
