News From the City of Treasure Island • Feb. 5, 2025 City Hall • 10451 Gulf Blvd. |
|
The Treasure Island City Commission voted unanimously (5-0) last night, Feb. 4, to approve the location of the city’s new Public Safety Facility. The facility will be built next to City Hall at 10499 Gulf Blvd., providing a strategic central location for the Treasure Island Police and Fire Departments.
This new location will improve emergency response times for Treasure Island Fire Rescue and increase police visibility within the community. This site is projected to decrease Fire and EMS response times by an estimated 38 seconds citywide. The modernized Public Safety Facility will be designed to withstand tropical storms and hurricanes, ensuring that first responders can continue serving residents in times of crisis. The facility will also feature a dedicated Emergency Operations Center (EOC), allowing first responders and city staff to coordinate disaster response efforts effectively.
“It’s important for us to have a facility that will withstand storms so we can return immediately and serve the residents of Treasure Island from the island, not from an EOC that is miles away,” Treasure Island Police Chief John Barkley said. “We all want to be here with them as we are a part of the community.”
Additionally, the City Commission voted to approve the issuance of an Engineering/Design RFQ (Request for Qualifications) for the new Public Safety Facility, moving the project forward toward the design and development phase.
“Deciding on the best site for our new public safety facility is the first step in replacing the facility destroyed in the recent hurricanes,” Treasure Island Fire Rescue Chief Trip Barrs said. “Approval to issue a request for qualifications will allow us to begin the process of hiring design and engineering professionals to create a public safety building that is an asset to this community for many years to come.”
As more details on the project timeline and design become available, they will be shared with the community.

Crews are hard at work rehabilitating Treasure Island Community Center Park, which was used as a debris management site following Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Over the next few weeks, crews will till the park and rake the soil to collect any remaining debris.
Soil samples have been sent to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the city is awaiting results. Once the site is prepped, the park will be seeded to restore the grass. The Parks and Recreation Department will meet with the community at a later date to discuss park beautification.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management is excited to announce Florida’s first Statewide Residential Mitigation Program, Elevate Florida. The goal of this program is to enhance community resilience by mitigating private residences against natural hazards.
Mitigation is the reduction or elimination of potential risk to life and/or property. Mitigation is a cost-effective way to avoid future damage from disasters, such as flooding or high winds. Typical residential mitigation projects include:
- Structure Elevation: Physically raising an existing structure utilizing a variety of methods
- • Structure Mitigation Reconstruction: Construction of an improved, elevated building where an existing building has been partially or completely demolished or destroyed.
- • Structure Acquisition & Demolition (Buyout): A local community purchases a structure from voluntary sellers and it’s demolished
