Pinellas County has completed its beach restoration of Sunset Beach as part of the recovery process from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. County contractors screened 38,566 cubic yards of sand and placed it back on the beach.
County contractors made significant progress in placing sand where they can in compliance with current regulations. However, some beach areas remain too narrow for restoration work without encroaching below the mean high water line, where contractors are NOT permitted to operate.
Additionally, city, county, and state officials are collaborating with the White House to explore the possibility of an emergency federal project for further restoration. If a federal project does not proceed, Pinellas County has applied for an emergency permit to conduct nourishment activities as an alternative.
People are still asked to stay clear of areas on the beach where contractors are removing piles of sand that cannot be used for the beach restoration.
