Treasure Island Selects a New City Manager

Following a rigorous selection process that started with 61 candidates, Charles (Chuck) Anderson has been chosen as the new City Manager for Treasure Island. With the assistance of Strategic Government Resources, the mayor and commissioners narrowed down the field to 12 semi-finalists, then to five finalists, and finally to four after one candidate withdrew.

Last week, the mayor, commissioners, and executive city staff conducted interviews with each finalist, provided tours of the community, and held a meet and greet for residents, businesses, and stakeholders to get to know the candidates. At a June 20 Special City Commission Meeting, the Commission publicly interviewed each candidate before ultimately deciding, in a 5-0 vote, to hire Chuck Anderson.

Chuck Anderson is currently serving the City of Great Falls, MT as the Deputy City Manager since 2017 and previously served as the Public Works Director for the City of Steamboat Springs, CO. Prior to his career in local government, Chuck served as the Command Chief at the Malstrom Air Force Base in Montana from 2011-2012 and the Command Chief at the Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia from 2009-2011.

Chuck has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND and a bachelor’s degree in resource management from Troy University in Troy, AL. Chuck is recently certified as a Project Management Professional from the Project Management Institute, and he is an Executive Board Member with the Montana Defense Alliance, and the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee.

The next steps will include contract negotiations and determining a start date for Mr. Anderson to begin his new role as City Manager of Treasure Island.

City Hall Visitor Parking

Planning a visit to City Hall. The visitor's parking lot is located on the northeast side of the building (to the right of the main entrance). The first hour of parking is free during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Independence Day Celebration

Celebrate America by watching fireworks light up the sky over Treasure Island Beach. The celebration will be on Thursday, July 4 (rain date July 5) starting around 9 p.m. The best viewing areas will be near the Gulf Front Park area of the beach located at 10400 Gulf Blvd. Bring a beach chair or towel and enjoy the show.

For this event, there will be parking in Treasure Island Park from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. for $20, credit cards only. No cash will be accepted and there will be no re-entry.

No Personal Fireworks on the Beach

In an effort to help keep Treasure Island Beach safe and protected on holidays such as Independence Day, the city will be enforcing current ordinances to curb the use of personal fireworks on the beach.

Current city ordinances that will include the use of personal fireworks will be:

• City Ordinance: Building Fires Without a Permit - Fireworks will be considered as using an open flame on the beach.
• City Ordinance: Leave No Trace-Obstructions on Beach - Since fireworks leave debris and litter on the beach, they fall under the Leave No Trace ordinance.
• City Ordinance: Lighting/Beach Lighting - Light from fireworks is not sea turtle friendly and therefore not permitted during sea turtle nesting season.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to celebrate responsibly, leave their fireworks at home, and enjoy the fireworks show hosted by the city. The Treasure Island Police Department will help educate people asking those who bring personal fireworks to the beach to take them back home or to their vehicles. The city will also help get the word out through social media, signs, variable message boards, etc.

There are two disturbances the National Hurricane Center is monitoring. These systems are not expected to impact our area, but that doesn't mean to let your guard down. It's a great reminder ALWAYS to be prepared during hurricane season. Get storm ready by visiting MyTreasureIsland.com/StormReady.

TIPD On Patrol

Treasure Island Police Officers utilize patrol cars, boats and bikes to do the job. Officer Funck utilized her patrol bicycle during her recent shift to patrol the streets and beaches of Treasure Island. Bicycle patrols allow officers to have more contact with the citizens and detect illegal activity that may be more difficult to detect on foot or in a vehicle.

Fire Department Training

Check out this video of a few Gulf beaches fire departments coming together for a Rapid Intervention Team Drill at Treasure Island's old City Hall building! The purpose of this training is to teach firefighters to work as a team to rescue lost, trapped, or injured firefighters in a fire emergency.

Fertilizer Restrictions

Pinellas County’s rainy season fertilizer restrictions will take effect Saturday, June 1, and will last through Sept. 30.

• Lawn, landscape fertilizers with nitrogen and/or phosphorus may not be sold or used through Sept. 30.
• Phosphorus may not be used any time of year unless a soil test confirms the need.
• Keep fertilizer 10 feet away from the top of the bank of any surface water, landward edge of a seawall, or a designated wetland.
• Fertilizer runoff can pollute waterways and cause harmful algae blooms.
