Attention beachgoers, residents and businesses! It's the start of sea turtle nesting season, which means we must do our part in protecting these amazing creatures. Sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs between May and October, and it's important to respect their nesting areas and minimize disturbances. Here are some ways you can help keep sea turtles safe:
- Avoid using flashlights or cellphones on the beach at night, as it can disorient nesting turtles and their hatchlings.
- Fill in holes in the sand and flatten sandcastles before leaving the beach, as they can obstruct the path of sea turtles.
- Keep a safe distance from nesting turtles and do not touch or disturb them or their nests.
- Dispose of all trash properly and don't leave any items on the beach.
- Artificial lightning is disorienting to nesting and hatchling sea turtles. Sea turtles are less disturbed by the long wavelengths of light (560 nanometers or longer). Narrowband long wavelength lights appear amber, orange, or red in color.
By following these guidelines, we can all play a role in protecting sea turtles during nesting season. CLICK HERE for more information.

Hurricane season is fast approaching, and the city of Treasure Island wants to help everyone get storm-ready by hosting a Hurricane Expo on May 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. at City Hall on the 5th Floor. This event will feature a special presentation by Spectrum Bay News 9 Chief Meteorologist Mike Clay on what to expect this hurricane season. There will also be presentations from city staff about what to do in the event of a storm and how citizens and business owners can prepare. Those who attend will also receive safety and survival tips, flood insurance education, Red Cross information and more.
Most predictions are calling for above-normal tropical activity this year fueled by exceptionally warm ocean waters and an expected shift from El Niño to La Niña. It is crucial for residents to be prepared as hurricane season in Florida starts on June 1 and goes through the end of November. The expo will provide valuable information on how to protect yourself and your property during a storm.
Residents are encouraged to visit mytreasureisland.com/stormready to sign up for Alert Pinellas, learn about their evacuation zone, get storm preparation tips and more.

Treasure Island Fire Rescue is excited to host its 2nd Annual Walk to Beach Day on May 24 from 10 a.m. to noon along Gulf Blvd between 104th and 108th Avenue.
Inspired by the success of "Walk to School Day," this event aims to promote community, health, environment, and benefits by spreading awareness about bicycle and pedestrian safety on the beach and beyond. With Memorial Day weekend approaching and summer just around the corner, this event is the perfect opportunity to educate the community on the importance of safety.
The event will feature five stations along Gulf Blvd, with volunteers stationed at each crosswalk between 104th and 108th Avenue. Volunteers will be equipped with safety reflective vests and flags to help pedestrians cross the street safely. Volunteers will also provide education on the importance of using crosswalks and the need for both drivers and pedestrians to be alert and aware.
Volunteers are essential to the success of this event. Those interested in volunteering can email mnelson@mytreasureisland.org for more information or call 727-547-4590.
