Director's Message

Dear Library Patrons:

This week, the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) will complete the implementation of new services that have been approved for our new fiscal year (2018-19). Thanks to the adoption of Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez’s recommended budget by the Board of County Commissioners, MDPLS will be providing you with some exciting new service enhancements as part of our dedication to offering great customer service. They include:

Director Ray Baker

Customer Service and Convenience

  • Additional hours and days of service; see our FY 2018-19 Branch Schedule here.
  • We are now a “Fine-Free” library; no more daily overdue fines on late materials. But we still appreciate you returning your materials on time!
  • We will auto-renew your item before the due date if no one else is waiting for it. See our new lending policy here.
  • Due to numerous requests from our customers, items requested for pickup will be held for seven calendar days.
  • Use our new customercare@mdpls.org email address to get help with your account, solve sign-in or password issues, or receive any other assistance that you might need.

Library Materials

  • With additional funding allocated for the purchase of library materials, we will continue to focus on:
    • Reducing wait times for popular print and digital titles.
    • Fulfilling requests for purchase from our customers in a timelier manner.
    • Providing a broader selection of materials in languages reflective of our community.

Improving Our Library Facilities and Technology

  • “Pardon Our Dust” signs will become increasingly visible at our library locations as we move into FY 2018-19 with several improvement projects – ranging from major infrastructure projects to interior renovations – currently in progress or scheduled to begin. While we will do all that we can to minimize the need for temporary branch closures and any impact to service operations, it will sometimes be unavoidable to achieve the level of improvement that is needed to create outstanding spaces for you to enjoy.
  • The replacement and upgrading of our public computers will continue with the goal of having all of them on Windows 10 by the beginning of 2019.
  • Our Internet and Wi-Fi bandwidth was recently upgraded giving our customers faster and more reliable service, whether using our computers or their own devices.

Homework Help

  • Our Homework Help and Tutoring Program, which provides free, in-library tutoring sessions to students grades K-12, will continue at our Homework Help sites every Saturday from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Nearly 1,000 kids are currently receiving help every Saturday through this program. See a list of our Homework Help locations here.

As you can see, we have a lot in store for our customers this coming year. Visit our website at www.mdpls.org or sign up for our newsletter to find out what’s happening at your library and keep up-to-date on any temporary closures that may be scheduled at your branch location.

Thank you for being a library customer. We look forward to continuing to serve you.

Sincerely,

Ray Baker signature
