On Saturday, hundreds of baseball fans and Leon County residents celebrated the official first day of the newly renovated Miccosukee Community Park.
Miccosukee Little League teams played games on improved baseball fields, while other park goers enjoyed the larger, safer playground. And while not front and center, everyone will appreciate the stormwater management updates to protect and preserve the grounds.
“Parks like this encourage healthier, active lifestyles for everyone nearby,” said Leon County Commissioner Bryan Desloge. “Out here today, you see parents, neighbors, children and sports fans all getting together and enjoying a great amenity.”
Part of the day was to acknowledge the baseball fields, but Kristi Aiken, president of the Miccosukee Little League, said the park was really a symbol for the community.
“The Miccosukee Community Park is a gem for us,” said Aiken. “A lot of talented young athletes will learn important lessons on these fields, but as a community, we appreciate all the features. We’re lucky to have a County government that supports us when we are circling the bases, and also when we just want to come out to a park and relax with our family.”
A beautiful day was the backdrop for players, coaches, volunteers, and many members of the community - young and old - in attendance for the opening day of the Little League season that included a very special dedication ceremony, the unveiling of a memorial statute and the field naming for Trent McElroy.
“This is a great day,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “It reflects a lot of hard work by Leon County employees and a commitment by the Board of County Commissioners, and highlights our partnership with the Little League Board and this very special community.”
Leigh Davis, Director of Leon County Parks and Recreation, encouraged all Leon County residents to visit the park, which can be found at 15011 Cromartie Road, just east of the intersection of Veterans Memorial Road and Moccasin Gap Road.
“Sometimes you spend all your day planning construction, meeting deadlines, and brainstorming with contractors,” said Davis. “But on a day like today, you remember why we do the work. Parks bring people together.”
