Penny Sales Tax Information Online at www.LeonPenny.org 

Leon County Government and the City of Tallahassee recently announced the launch of www.LeonPenny.org, a comprehensive website that features information about the penny sales tax. On November 4, voters will be asked to decide whether or not to approve the extension. This website is designed as a guide to help citizens understand what the penny sales tax has done in Tallahassee and Leon County and how it will be used in the future, if it is extended. 

On the website, citizens can: 

• View a map to see where proposed projects are located across the community;
• Read the actual ballot language;
• Explore improvements already accomplished by the penny sales tax since 1989;
• See highlights of the proposed projects to be accomplished, if the penny sales tax is extended; and
• Learn about the sales tax citizens committee and the work they accomplished.         

Since 1989, the penny sales tax has helped shape the community. Voters came together to authorize widening roads, relieving traffic congestion and addressing safety needs. In 2000, an extension was approved with a broader mission to include expanding parks and reducing flooding. The results include major traffic improvements to roads such as Franklin Boulevard, Mahan Drive, Blair Stone Road and Capital Circle. In addition, areas in need have been transformed into amenities such as Cascades Park, and homes and businesses are better protected from flooding. 

With the penny sales tax extension set to expire in 2019, citizens again came together over the past two and half years in town hall meetings and public hearings. The sales tax citizen committee, appointed by the County and City Commissions, held dozens of public meetings, seeking input and counsel from thousands of citizens, to present a forward-looking consensus plan for the community. 

This plan, approved by both the County and City Commission, continues to improve local roads, build sidewalks to schools, relieve traffic congestion, protect natural resources, improve parks, and create and promote jobs in the community. Every single dollar generated by this penny sales tax extension will be spent for improvements right here in Leon County while investing in local jobs. If extended, the penny sales tax would continue with citizen oversight and annual audits.
