County Unveils Fort Braden History Walk

County Unveils Fort Braden History Walk

The new walk is the first of several new amenities coming to the Fort Braden community

Today, Leon County Government unveiled the Fort Braden History Walk: A Community Trail, a new walking trail that connects the Jane G. Sauls Fort Braden Library and Fort Braden Community Center. The half-mile wood chip trail highlights the history of Fort Braden in an engaging and interactive way that will be informative to citizens and visitors alike.

“History is an important part of preserving culture and heritage,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor. “This new walking trail will offer Leon County and the Fort Braden community the chance to reflect on and learn from our history.”

Along the Fort Braden History Walk: A Community Trail, signs feature Fort Braden history topics including Fort Braden’s early settlers, the area’s rich tradition of education, the creation of Lake Talquin, and the military history that gives the area its name. To increase engagement and accessibility for all, the trail is also available digitally at LeonCountyFL.gov/FBTrail.

“We at the County are always looking for ways to enhance our public spaces in unique ways that reflect our diverse community,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “This new trail is just one of the many ways Leon County staff finds innovative and creative ways to bring even more value to pre-existing spaces.”

In addition to the Fort Braden History Walk: A Community Trail, the County has plans to further enhance the area. By late 2022 / early 2023, the playground will be updated with interactive play features including a large jungle gym and music area. Over the next few months, the County will also add a fitness area with outdoor exercise equipment that will be versatile enough for visitors of all fitness levels.

“My job as District 2 Commissioner is so fulfilling because of projects like the Fort Braden History Walk,” said Leon County District 2 Commissioner Jimbo Jackson. “With the vision from the community and the work of our dedicated County team, we’ve created a gem in Fort Braden for the community and visitors to enjoy.”
