Leon County Selected as the First Community in the State of Florida to Host the FHSAA Beach Volleyball Championships

Today, Leon County Government announced it has been selected to host the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Beach Volleyball State Championships. In 2020, the FHSAA Board of Directors unanimously voted to sanction and recognize Beach Volleyball for the 2021-2022 school year, making 2022 the sport’s inaugural Championship. The event will be held on May 6-7, 2022, at Florida State University’s Seminole Beach Volleyball Courts.

“It is quite an honor to be awarded the FHSAA Beach Volleyball State Championship for the next three years,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor. “We look forward to hosting and celebrating the top high school beach volleyball players who will be the first FHSAA Champions of the sport.”

The inaugural FHSAA Beach Volleyball State Championship is expected to draw 16 teams and 160 athletes from across the state, providing an estimated economic impact of over $500,000.

“It is an honor to host the first-ever FHSAA beach volleyball tournament right here in Leon County,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “Being chosen to host the inaugural championship speaks to the confidence our County team instills in sports event organizers everywhere. Also, this statewide championship aligns with the County’s goal of attracting championships across all sports and driving our local tourism economy.”

The FHSAA supervises and regulates interscholastic athletic programs for high school students at member public, private and charter schools. The organization also recognizes and honors academic achievement among student-athletes at almost 800 middle, junior and senior high schools statewide. Headquartered in Gainesville, it is the official governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida.

“The Leon County Division of Tourism is honored to grow our partnership with FHSAA in hosting the first-ever Beach Volleyball Championship,” said Kerri L. Post, Director of Leon County Tourism. “We look forward to welcoming coaches, athletes and spectators for an exceptional championship experience in Leon County.”

“Over the years, the FHSAA has been privileged to partner with Visit Tallahassee and the local Tallahassee community,” said FHSAA Executive Director, George Tomyn. “The relationship that Visit Tallahassee has cultivated with both Florida State University and Leon County Public Schools has provided thousands of student-athletes in our state an opportunity to participate in a championship event at one of our state’s finest facilities. We believe this inaugural Florida High School Beach Volleyball State Championship will be no different, as our top beach volleyball athletes compete on an NCAA Division I campus.”
