Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long Named Capital Outlook Person of the Year

 

Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long has been named 2021 Person of the Year by Capital Outlook. Each year, Capital Outlook identifies extraordinary persons and organizations in the community who have distinguished themselves in leadership, service and community engagement. This designation highlights Long’s lifelong commitment to public service.

 

“I’m so honored to receive this recognition, which would not be possible without the support of Leon County staff members who work tirelessly to keep our community healthy, safe and thriving even in the midst of unimaginable challenges,” said Leon County Administrator Vince Long. “I am extremely proud to lead an organization that sets the standard in public service on behalf of and alongside County residents. None of what I have been able to do would be possible without the support of our Board of County Commissioners and the incredible work of the entire County team.”

 

The 2021 Person of the Year designation highlights Long’s leadership as the County addressed the urgent needs of local residents while remaining committed to achieving long-term community goals. Over the past two years, people everywhere were faced with threats to their lives and livelihoods. Locally, Long recognized these challenges and steered the organization to protect the most vulnerable and hardest-to-reach communities through targeted COVID-19 vaccination education and engagement as well as the dispersal of tens of millions of dollars in direct assistance to households, businesses and nonprofit partners.

 

“Vince has provided steadfast leadership and an unwavering commitment to the people who call Leon County home,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor. “I am especially proud of how Vince managed the process of dispersing millions of dollars in federal funding to individuals and businesses in our community who needed assistance during the coronavirus pandemic. This award recognizes Vince not only for his swift and effective response to crises like the pandemic, but also for his leadership in long-term initiatives to make our County such a great place to live, work and raise a family.”

 

Thanks to Long’s leadership, the County received  recognition from the U.S. Treasury Department for being one of the fastest and most effective local governments at distributing Emergency Rental Assistance funds. Furthermore, the County was recognized on the national level for the COVID-19 Public Information campaign, Economic Disaster Relief Grant (CEDR) and Local Emergency Assistance for Nonprofits (LEAN).

 

Additionally, Long led the County in recruiting Amazon, increasing local opportunity and economic growth. This created the largest private sector job opportunity in the area’s history. More information about County initiatives and successes can be found in the 2021 Annual Report.

About Vince Long: Vince Long has worked for Leon County since 1995 and was appointed County Administrator by the Board of County Commissioners in 2011. As the Chief Executive Officer of the County government, he provides fiscal, strategic and operational leadership to the organization, as well as professional implementation of the Board’s policies. He holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the Askew School of Public Administration and Policy at Florida State University and is a graduate of the Harvard University, JFK School of Government Institute for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. He is also a Credentialed Manager by the International City/County Managers Association (ICMA), serves on the Board of Directors and is a past president of the Florida Association of County Managers, serves on the Board of Directors for the Florida Association of Counties Institute for County Government, and serves on the Florid Trust Board of Trustees. A graduate of Leadership Tallahassee and Leadership Florida, Vince is a leader in many community and professional organizations. He also serves as a member of the Advisory Council and is a regular lecturer at the Askew School, as well as a frequent speaker and trainer and has been featured in national media and publications for his expertise in local government issues.
