Leon County Observes the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 with Annual Day of Remembrance and Service

Today, Leon County Government marked the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks with its annual Day of Remembrance and Service at the Frontier Estates Neighborhood. More than 100 County employees and community volunteers came together to rehabilitate 36 different homes and properties in a spirit of unity and service. 

“The County’s service today honors the more than 3,000 lives lost 20 years ago in the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Rick Minor. “With our work today, we also show our appreciation for the first responders and veterans who have been and continue to serve our community during these challenging times.”

This year’s 9/11 Day of Service is the largest ever undertaken by Leon County, with improvements happening at nearly 40 properties in the neighborhood. Throughout the day, volunteers completed various housing rehabilitation projects, including exterior home painting, landscaping, driveway pressure washing and more. 

“Each year, I take so much pride in joining our County employees and community members at this important annual event,” said Leon County District 5 Commissioner Kristin Dozier. “As the District Commissioner for Frontier Estates, I know the residents of this beautiful neighborhood are grateful for the County’s work today.” 

Six veterans were presented with flags representing their military branch of service, and volunteers mounted the flags outside of their homes.  

“For Leon County, our annual Day of Service is one of our proudest events, and that means even more as we near the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “Today we honor those who sacrificed their lives, and through our work we acknowledge the nationwide spirit of unity and service that followed.” 

Since 2011, Leon County Government has held the 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service to honor victims, survivors, and others who rose in service in response to the attacks. 

“I have lived in Frontier Estates for a little over 30 years, and I am so pleased and grateful that the County has come out today,” said Gwendolyn Wilkins. ”We are so appreciative.”
