Local Survivors Share Experiences Battling COVID-19

Survivors stories are a powerful reminder to get informed and get vaccinated

On Wednesday, April 21 Pastor Gregory James hosted three local COVID-19 survivors on the Wednesday Wakeup segment of Hallelujah 95.3FM. Gasden County football coach Corey Fuller, former NFL player Tamarack Vanover, and Cam1Newton South Director Harrison Smith all shared personal experiences battling the COVID-19 virus. The men, all with successful athletic careers, made their message very clear – no one is too tough for the coronavirus.  

  

“I’m not taking COVID again for a million dollars,” said Corey Fuller during the broadcast. The other guests shared similar sentiments and urged all who are able to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to do so. Personal stories remain potent motivation for community members to seek vaccinations. Listen to the full broadcast here.   

  

Leon County Government, along with local community members, the Tallahassee-Leon County Coronavirus Vaccination Community Education and Engagement Taskforce,  and other state and local partners will continue to share important public health messaging and host vaccination events.   

  

There will be a free pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic Saturday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at China Hill Primitive Baptist Church located at 458 Fairbanks Ferry Road. Additionally, there will be a free pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic Saturday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to noon at Fort Braden Community Park, 15000 Blountstown Highway. While more events are being planned and announced, the educational outreach coordinated by the Task Force has directly reached more than 5,000 households and led to the vaccination of nearly 500 people at pop-up vaccination clinics. To answer questions about vaccines and other COVID-related questions, the Florida Department of Health operates a 24/7 COVID-19 call center at (866) 779-6121. Leon County residents can also call the County Health Department at (850) 404-6300, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
